What's the fix for a noisy speedo?

I heard a squeeking, whirring noise and thought it was my clutch or something but i stuck my ear to my instrument gauge and it's coming from there. I'm pretty sure it's the speedometer or the cable. I have the dash apart so now's the time to fix 'er. Any suggestions?

Yes... replace or lube the speedo cable. That was the culprit with mine.

you either have a dry speedo cable or one of the infamous speedo head probs.you could try and get some speedo cable lube and lube the cable first instead of just replacing it.

How do I go about lubing the speedo cable? It's all pretty well sealed up, isn't it?

There are speedo lube kits available at most parts stores (as mentioned by rat) or... what I did was disconnect my cable at both ends and used pressurized air to shoot graphite through it. (Ummmm... don't shoot the graphite towards the side that end in the car... that would be messy. hehe)

Oh ok... well i don't have any pressurized air... i'll just get a new cable.

Simply disconnecting it at the tranny will do away with the noise completely. Probably not the solution you had in mind though. The other guys have you covered - cable/lube first, then speedo itself if the cable doesn't fix it.
