Drivetrain What's the proper way to check auto trans fluid?

'93 AOD. What's the proper way to check trans fluid to get an accurate reading? I'm running straight Mercon V. When I floor it, the car shifts pretty hard going into 2nd gear. Enough to 'chirp' the tires.

Another reference for the fluid level check procedure is usually engraved directly onto the dipstick itself. It’s basic obviously since there is limited space for engraving / stamping.
