Whats this ticking noise coming from my engine?

When i run the engine at idle, and rev it up while in neutral, the engine is fine. But when i start driving and get about halfway on the throttle, or make the engine work a bit going up a hill, i hear a tick-tick-tick noise coming from the engine. Someone said it might be the timing. Anybody think they have an idea? If it is a timing problem, what do i do? thanks.

Sorry, no help, but I think I have the same problem. Does it go at engine speed? where is it coming from?

An exhaust leak is a common cause of "ticking". Try to isolate the problem.

well, it doesnt seem to tick unless im driving and trying to go up a hill, or starting to step on it harder. If it were an exhaust leak, it should be apparent when not driving too. The tick is either there or not there, it doesnt get louder.

Like i said, its coming from the engine, and it doesnt matter how fast im going, just how hard im stepping on the gas.

the distributor cap was replaced by someone else when i got the car back, and it never did it before, so could it be possible that something under the distibutor cap is causing the tick?

had the same problem.. mine was two different things..

1 I stuck a lifter and destroyed it
2. I spun several bearings..
(Dont ask how... just managed to do it)

get a stethescope and try to isolate the problem.. if it is a stuck lifter.. you should be able to hear it from the top end better than the bottom.. if it is a bearing.. you will here it from the oil pan better.

How long has it been doing it? Mine did it just as you described for about 2 months until it finally did it all the time.. When i pulled the motor apart. 4 rod bearings were not where they should have been.. and were GOLD from spinning to much

Anything is possible and not having heard the "tick" I can only suggest common possibilities based on many years of experience. Seek knowledgeable advice from someone who can actually hear the problem.

i just drove the car for about 5 min.

i dont have breather caps on my valve covers yet, and when i got done driving the car, there was some white smoke-ish stuff streaming out from the holes. Also, some was coming from between the head and the block i think, on the outer edge. The tick was still there. does the smoke mean anything?

if it only ticks under load it could be your timing is set too high. try backing off the timing a little bit and see if it goes away. just loosen the disty nut and turn it a TINY bit CCW. at least i think its CCW to back off timing...

oh and mark the disty and block before moving it so that you can put it back where it was if it doesnt help. if you've got a timing light that will make it easier to set it where it belongs.

i would think that a spun bearing or noisey valve/lifter would be heard whenever the engine is running.

Your suggestion is what a shop just told me to do. I called the place that just worked on my mustang, and they suggested the same thing. So i might just turn it "a TINY bit CCW".

You back off the timing by moving the distributor CCW???? Hmmmmm....

Hmmmmm. I didnt even think about that, but i dont think that would be it, cause that would be a very very fast noise, this one is not so quick. but good suggestion. i'll check it out next time i take it out.

You didn't notice any red cardboard type sticks, usually 4-5 of them, taped together with some wires coming out, did you?

I'm in favor of either a "ping" which is a timing problem, or an exhaust leak, which may not be audible at idle.

What did the Shop do to it?
I found an annoying tick from the fan blade hitting the lower shroud along the edge only under load.
So it can be many things.

prob an exhaust leak if its under a load and sounds like a soft ticking. if it sounds like a sharp ticking, likely valvetrain. try disconnecting your vaccum advance hose and driving around the block, it could be your timing or intake system. if exhaust, get some lead or copper gaskets. paper gaskets are old news, and cant be reused. 35 for some earl gaskets is worth it. the reason you dont hear most exhaust leaks at idle is because you dont have the same air velocity or pressures that exist when the engine is under a heavy load, ie climbing a hill.
