What's With Package Trays?

he must be a nut because my autokrafters catalog has the same part number for the 65-68 mustangs even in that style of package shelf. they are however $200 each.

Actually, there is a difference between the early 65-67 and the 68 package trays. In the '68's, the holes for the speaker pods on the sheet metal are spaced further apart to allow the magnet to fit without protruding out too much. I bought the interior kit from them and a package tray and they explained to me the difference. By the way, the kit looks awesome!

On a stock Mustang coupe, the rear package tray from 65 - 68 are the same. It was mounted bumpy side up and painted to match the interior. If you wanted a rear speaker or speakers you cut holes in the cardboard where the openings in the frame under it are located. 65 and 66's only offered one rear speaker as an option and it was located in the center on the tray. If you want a different look, try covering the package tray in headliner material, looks trick but stock with flush mounted speakers. If you order the pictured restomod one, year model does make a difference due to the holes in the package tray support.
