Wow, great to see all the posts. I put this out there to learn to, I certainly dont know everything, atleast not yet. I saw a few posts, and I couldnt find a definition in other threads, whats an h/c/i package? - haha, I think I just found my own answer - heads/cam/intake.
Honestly I was thinking about a 5.0 or 5.8 stroker very well tuned. Its good to hear that you can still get a good ride from these good tunes. And even sounds like keep the same decent gas(atleast as long as im not pounding it )
Also someone mentioned a supercharger, and had been thinking about getting one, and after some reading it started to sound like in particular the Vortech would really wear down the engine and suck up your gas mileage. What is a satisfying charger, and is it dependant on the engine size?

I'm happy with my little 302 combo... Edelbrock Performer heads, Performer intake, and a good ole Crane 2040 cam (e-cam).

It's your foot that has the largest effect on how quickly a blown motor sucks gas. I run a Kenne Bell (instant boost) and can go from 10 mpg to 15 mpg in town just by changing how I drive. With a centrifugal supercharger, I'd imagine that the differences might even be more considering that it's "easier" (for lack of a better term) to stay out of the boost.

Further, I was wondering where you guys recommend getting an engine? I only know a few places outside Ford Racing. Where else can you get a good engine?

All I can vouch for is what I have and thats a 347 from Coast http://www.coasthigh.com/ Although there are other good and reputable companies. Some of these other guys that have dealt with other companies can give you some more options. There is also a builder on here that I read alot of good things about. I am sure someone will mention his name because honestly I can't recall it right now, it rick something???

The perfect street engine will vary from person to person and vary depending on the state where you live and the power/reliability goals you have. So this is just my opinion.

I love superchagers and Turbos. But won't own either. No I have a soft spot for naturally aspirted engines. If 302 cubes is good, 351 cubes is better and 408 cubes is even better yet. 460 even better still. 598 inches, that's almost perfect. A 9 or 9.5:1 compression 87 octane pump gas 598 cubic inch engine.....

But I digress.....for a Foxbody I'd want a 408-427W with AFR heads and proper fuel injection. Shot for 10:1 or less compression. As with everything a custom cam should be considered MANDATORY.

5spd GT - Read the guys original post. He wants tons of power and has already looked at strokers. So toss a 302 out the door. Cost difference is minimum, I know I just built my 347 from CHP, it was only a few hundred dollars more from say a 306 when figuring that you will need new heads and intake and the like whichever way you go. Taking into consideration this guy wants more power, why would someone be rebuilding a 302 back to a 302 if they were asking for an "ideal engine" "with tons of power". No need for a new flywheel if you get a stock 50 oz. balance. Machine work is only .030 (which a basic 306 would need anyway) and the bottom of the cylinders notched.

Tons of power equals what?

He said he was looking at "tuned 302's"...so why throw it out the door?

Do you want me to add up the price of a stroker over a 302 for you to further my point because I can/will.

So what is an ideal engine?

Machine work is correct...but that cost extra.

You thought you had a point...didn't you?

I agree with 5spd. I must also say that a 306 with proper components will probably make 30-40 less HP than a equally setup 347. Is 30-40hp the dividing line between moderate HP and "TONS" of HP

Man do you love to argue...His later quote said he was more interested in the strokers, or do you have selective reading for your arguments sake. True, tons of power is going to vary from person to person. I am not saying a 347 is tons of power but I didn't just mean a 302 based stroker either depending on a persons budget what about a 351 based stroker? True, we don't know his budget. True, an ideal engine is going to vary person to person. One thing I do agree with you on is a 302 is much cheaper because you can re-use parts. What I meant was going to more displacement. A "302" based stroker isn't much more than say a 306. Man I wish you would read and understand entire quotes before posting. Once you leave a 302 and go to more displacement and have to purchase all the supporting stuff the cost difference isn't huge. When my engine took a crap, I was all stock so I needed everything. I looked at all my options. I wanted all I could get with my budget. I wanted more displacement than a 302. I have all my reciepts and the difference between a stroker and say s 306 isn't much.

. I am not gonna "net" argue with you anymore.

Hmmm... my perfect street engine would be:
View attachment 502472

A Dart blocked 327
Zero balanced forged internals
Dished Pistons with zero gap top ring
9.2 - 9.5 compression
AFR 205s / 58cc (port matched to the lower intake)
1.6 Rollers
Custom ground blower cam designed with no regard for emmisions
Billet steel flywheel
5 qt oil pan with windage tray
Kenne Bell Blowzilla pushing around 14 lbs
Snow Performance Water Injection
75mm Accufab TB
90MM Mass Air Sensor (pulling in cold air)
Smog stuff deleted except for TB spacer
Heating and Air Conditioning retained
Long Tubes (Ceramic Coated)
Bassani X-Pipe and Quiet Thunder Cat Back

Did I forget anything?

Would you mine expressing how much more it cost you over the 306...since it isn't much. Your the one with the bias reply about strokers and then trying to say "oh he didn't mean just the 347"...your not too good at this...but if you would like to continue, go for it

daggar - That looks strangely familiar

You can't beat a stout 302 for a regularly driven street car. H/C/I would be perfect. You could be making over 300rwhp pretty easily and still be very streetable. If you wanna get a little more out of it, install nitrous. This will allow you to keep the streetability and the extra power will just be a touch away when you want it.
