Hoping you guys could help me out with this

GFs car has a chirping sound coming from the wheel over 2k rpm. Applying the brakes does not make the sound decrease. Before this, it made a 'whoosh, whoosh, whoosh' sound through first gear, but not after.

I haven't had a chance to look at it/diagnose, because she's at work right now.

Any ideas?

What type of car is it? Is it RPM dependent or speed dependent?

VW GTI MKII (1992)

The sound increases with speed, not RPM...as far as I can tell from her description

Front or rear, make noise at any other time?

Kinda sounds like a wheel bearing or maybe even a half-shaft.

Front-left wheel only. Don't wheel bearings usually make a 'humming' sound.

Also, this all started after she had a shop do the balljoints...any coincidence?

Well I myself haven't had a chance to mess with the suspension yet. But maybe when the shop did the ball joints?

That was my thought Duncan. It's been years since I worked on a VW but in order to do a BJ, the halfshaft probably came out of the hub. If it was hammered, that can damage the CV joint (certainly not that this is what happened, but it was a thought I had).


Maybe there are idiosyncrasies that the VW forum (or Nik) would say "oh yeah, it's ABC").
