I just called MM about this! (I do not think there is any difference in the stud length between the pre- and post-99 model years). The MM tech told me that for 25 mm spacers, I will need to trim about 1/4" (6 mm) off the studs. You can try 30 mm spacers but you have to be careful about the outside edge of the tire rubbing on the fender lip. When I measured the gap on my '98, I was right at 30 mm (so I went with the 25 mm adapters).
If you need to trim them, you can use a hacksaw or you can rent a die grinder and pick up a couple of 'cut-off' wheels at the hardware store. You can also get cut-off wheels for a Dremel but I think the job will stretch into several hours!! Put a nut on (all the way to the hub) before you cut. Then, file or grind the freshly cut part, use the nut to chase the threads, and you should be good to go.
