No you don't bang them in. If you have an impact wrench then you can pull them through with that. Just use a little WD40 on the knerl and put a couple of washer on the other side. (brake side) Finger tighten down a lug nut on the washers making sure the stud is straight, (Nut flat side down) then carefully tighten the nut down with the impact wrench. It should pull the stud through. If the axles and studs are hardened then you will probably need them pressed in.
 
You need to get them pressed in either by a good machine shop or you can do them yourself...if you have a hyd press and the knowledge. Either way it does not cost much and will be installed straight. If you "bang" them in you might not get them straight or damage the knurl/axle.
