Hey anyone know when the first GT was made? I have a chance to buy a 65 vert that seems to be a factory GT but the date code shows that the car was made (Q) March 27. I think someone told me that the first factory GT options came in (R) April. Does anyone know for sure? I don't want to pay to much or miss out on a great deal.

The car has all the right stuff but it could have been added later.

I may be wrong (nothing new there) but I think the GT was offered for sale in April, but could've very easily been built prior to April, therefore, your prospective car could easily be the real deal.

I don't remember where I read it, but I believe the earliest documented GT was built Feb 65. It is just that they weren't for sale until April 65.

Things to look for as they are harder to fake:
Fog lights/tail light come on together (with no other lights on) (orginal wiring?)
Fog light mount to grill vertical bar (not grill itself) to little L brakets
Dual exahust (check for hangers to frame)
Faster steering (check steering box) (manual only, power steering was the same)
4sp manual (check for a matching datecode to engine/trans combo)
Must be A/K code.
Front factory disk/say disk brakes on the brake pedal
No POWER disk brakes, extra large "fruit" jar for brake fluid
5 guage dash

Others...
Extra large front sway bar
No quarter chrome
GT badge on fenders (no other badge holes)
Mustang chrone/rocker paint

Good luck.

Thanks for the help. The car is a "A" code and has factory disc brakes, all the badging is correct. The current owner changed it from a 4 speed to and auto but said he had all the parts and tranny to change back. I havent seen the car yet as it is 3 hour drive but I am going this week. Do you know how big the sway bar was ona GT? Also, I was alittle unclear as to what you ment about the fog lights coming on with the tail lights. Was that the way the factory wired them or is that the way most people wired them in at home? How would I be able to tell if it had quick steering box?

THe 16:1 ratio box should be 4-4 1/2 turns of the steering wheel lock to lock. 19:1 5-5 1/2 lock to lock.
Here is link I found:

And another:

ANd the link to the steering box ID chart:

Bar is 13/16". Taillights coming on with the fogs is a factory thing. Obviously, leave the lights off when testing this.

What I meant by this is with all lights off and fog lights on, the tail lights will come on. BUT, you must make sure it is the original factory wiring, or it doesn't mean much.

Oh yeah, be sure to check the engine block has a matching date code to the car. I didn't do this and got a 66 block in a 65, but it was a fastback (and the block was blue, so I kind of knew) and bought it anyway. You will have to remove the starter to find this. So, make sure you know your date codes for cast items and for the tag on the door (they are different lettering systems).
