Where are you buying parts? US or CA

Hey, I probably saw some of you folks at SIR last summer. I have the white 99 with the Kenne Bell.
I've been pricing some parts out for this spring and it seems like everything is the same price as when the dollar was 65 cents. Is anyone buying from the US and is it cheaper? I'm lucky my brother-in-law has an account with Dix in Edmonton but it still seems like things are too expensive.

Depends, I buy a lot from the US and get it shipped up cheaper then buying it from Canada.

It all depends on what the dollar is at and what method of shipping you use. I bought a complete Mach 1 shaker and hood last year for under 1000 Canadian. My blower and tune was under 6000 when I was having a hard time finding the blower for under 6000 without a fuel system or tune.

Like Joe said it all depends. It's best just to shop around. I go about half and half, but usually my US parts are things that are smaller in size. Like this year, I got my K&N FIPK from the US and bunch of accessory type things. Most of the "big" stuff I go call up the Mustang Shop, they are pretty good about modifying their prices to fit the exchange rate.

I've had good luck direct from the states buying off ebay and saving some pretty good dough.Some stuff is the same price but I have to say that I haven't been impressed with The Mustang Shop in regards to their prices.I've given them several chances to adjust their prices to match a competitor and have refused to change a penny.

Wow, I've never found anyone that could beat The Mustang Shop on price. I won't buy anywhere else. They give me great service too. Matt, Bruce, and Drew are awesome.

Most definitely agreed. I've actually had conversations with Matt about their pricing. Their prices must incorporate shipping from their suppliers, customs, etc. So generally the direct conversation prices against an American company will be higher, but by the time you get the part to your house it will end up costing more. Like for example, I just checked the price of MM subframes on their site vs. MM site and the price difference between their US prices are $30. I don't think that you could get those parts to your house from the US for less than $30.

I import a lot of my parts. I have found that I can legally import parts cheaper at the end of the day than what I can get them here for. I have never bought from the Mustang Shop, curious to see their website and what they have in stock as I am looking for a few parts.

Well on my last "big" order I went with Western Motorsports because they were cheaper by a couple hundred bucks,even though they were the same on many items. THM refused to budge a dollar on a 2G+ order. I'm not expecting anything huge but something would have been nice. Also their website pricing is not any better than anyone else I"ve looked at.

The guys at The Mustang Shop are good, and Matt did a good job tuning my car. I bought the KB there and a few other things. Western Motorsports had the best price on gears when I bought my last set and I have their velocity intake. Mopac in Edmonton can't come close to anyone, I don't even bother phoning them anymore. One thing I do know is I'll be buying through my brother-in-law more now that he has a hoist in his shop. Even when he's diehard chevy a hoist is nice!

What are some good online shops in the US to order from Canada?

I'm looking towards getting some gears this summer, and I'm trying to find the best deal! So far it's WMS's 4.10 Gear Package for $349... anyone know a better place to buy?

Check back with me in a few weeks. I have something on the go right now. If all goes to plan I should have quite a few venders to choose from.

You need to shop around. They're waaaaay high on their prices. Even only paying GST, it was still cheaper for me to buy a lot of stuff here in Ontario. And that's paying an additional 8% tax on top of it.

As for buying stuff in the US. Sometimes it's cheaper. Privately is always decent, but Ebay can be a pain. Most US sellers on Ebay view Canada as shipping to the other side of the world and charge accordingly. Not only that, but for small items, it doesn't pay to use UPS or FedEX. Their brokerage fee's kill you and if I can at all help it, I'll always us USPS when I can.

I just bought a case (6) of Seafoam the other day and I almost s**t when I got the notice of delivery on my mailbox from UPS. I paid around $36.00US for the product, which I didn't think was bad at all. Then after UPS finished charging me their inflated $29.46US shipping and handling charges, I realized why I hated using them. But, since it was flammable material, USPS wouldn't ship it, so they had me over a barrel. Ok...no sweat, ya got me. Then low and behold, I get my product and there's an additional $36.00CAN for taxes, another handling fee, a C.O.D. charge (because I didn't call in my credit card to customs ahead of time, in order to pay the taxes....they nail you for a service fee they charge to front the taxes for you….the same as they would if you were paying for C.O.D) and of course brokerage fee's!?!?!

So...my nice little $7.00 a bottle shipment of Seafoam ended up finally costing me more than double that by the time I got it.

No wonder people are constantly sneaking things across and trying to screw the government every chance they get!

For what it is worth I sold some parts on eBay this spring and most of the buyers were American. I think that says something about prices between the two countries. UPS starts with a higher shipping cost and brokerage always adds a lot more than you expect. USPS and Canada Post are certainly the way to go if possible but a lot of vendors don't give you a choice. I would reserve my future U.S. buying for things totally unavailable here. If you can use the postal services, occassionally there is no additional cost over shipping and the price of the item.

I bought a MAF recently from JDs and although the price was relatively high after import cost it was nice to deal with the owner who seemed knowledgeable. If service is a factor I'd shop either side of the border. WMS has sold me many things and they do appear to be well meaning but at the end of the day I have ended up with stuff that cost too much or just did not work. I guess it is always a matter of buyer beware.
