Where can I get metal stock for drilling a spacer?

I want to make some spacers for my stabilizer bar. Anyone know where I can get some metal that is thick enough to use? I just need some metal about 1/2" thich that is about 4-5" long and 1-2" wide. I looked at my local Home Depot, but they didn't have anything, and they didn't have any idea where I could get what I needed.

Any ideas?

Most scrap yards have cut offs and smaller pieces of metal that you can buy by the pound. It'd probably be more expensive, but you could always try buying some metal from a machine shop.

We have raided some recycling/scrap/foundry places for some stock...made a super hairy rear bumper out of 5ft of C channel and old U bolts.

Probably not the safest/most legal thing to do but the place was known for extremely lax security...almost like they wanted us to take it instead of them having to do something with it. Like a fence/gate that was rusted OPEN.

I know some of the mom/pop type handyman hardware places have some stock.

It would probably be easier to use some type of square tubing cut to the thickness you need. Either weld up a plate at the top and bottom with hole for the bolt or use a big washer. This way you have more of a structure that can be made to the exact thickness you need. It will be alot easer to weld, cut, or drill a 1/8 or less square stock than a 1/2in piece of plate.

i talked to my engine builder, and he says he has some stock that is about 3/8". he is going to cut me about 6 pieces and give them to me next week.

dang it's great that my engine builder works in the same office as me.
