That is exactly it.Ever since i've owned my '03 new,i've always shifted at 6000/6100 rpm.All stock she pulled 14.01 at 100 mph,with 3.73's,catted mac h pipe,flowmaster 40 series,drop in K&N,and a sct tune,she hit the best of 13.7 at 103 mph on stock tires,and this year i've hit 104 to 105 mph,shifting at 6000/6100 rpm.
Sean Hyland made a comment on a speed vision show and stated that the 4.6 should be shifted at around 6000 rpm so it will drop into the "PEAK" torque rpm.Everybody says when they look at there dyno graphs that they should shift at where the peak rpm is,watch and see where the needle falls,it will drop even lower then the peak torque rpm,this is why you should shift around 6000 rpm,this way it will fall right into the peak torque rpm where it should be when shifting.
I've tried what others have said....5500 rpm,i've run worse .
The best advice i will give you is,try it yourself.Try different rpm's every couple of runs that you do,this way you can see,and learn what you and your stang will like in rpm's.
