Where to do this mod? Need Targa

I reallllly want to investigate some sort of targa/ t-top. So let me get this out of the way first to keep this thread on track. This car is near and dear to me. I will be buried in it, so it's not going anywhere for a vert. Besides, I already have a vert. Money is not the motivating factor either, if I get this done I want it done right and I would put a cage in to stiffen the car or anything else required. Yes maybe it will leak, I have the car in palm springs, it DOES NOT RAIN here. sooooo

I want this car, with a removeable roof. I've been doing a little asking around locally here in Palm Springs, CA....but I'm not getting anywhere.

There must be shops out there that will do this type of custom work right? I know this sounds kind of stupid but I may try to contact that shop that did work on that mtv show, pimp my ride. Anyone have any advice or direction in so cal or in general?

Another choice should it be easier and a better choice for some reason, have the whole roof removeable. Wasn't there a 95 cobra or so that was made with a removeable hard top. I know jms made a kit too, obviously they are out of biz so that is out of the question.

Any ideas would be great....

You talking about the gray cobra? (if memory serves) if so I think it was a jms.


I spent some time calling hot rod shops today and no dice. I mean jeesh, how hard could this really be, I mean I know it will take some labor to do it right but, saw the damn thing, do some fabrication for latches and weather stripping...... shouldn't be out of touch, especially here in cali. I mean this is the custom car captial of the states.......

Years ago someone sold a kit briefly. It may well have been JMS. I saw somw pics of a nice looking install once. I havent heard anything in a really long time tho I'm afraid. Good luck!!

Did you call JMS. I had a chip from them years ago. I dunno if they are even still around??

Forget "pimp my POS". There are indeed shops that do this kind of work. I'd start with some shops that restore older cars and do convertible work. See what they say. I'm guessing it will not be cheap.

Alrght I found 2 articles in magazines that might help you out.. 1 was from MMFF from October 2004. It has a Mach 1 targa top in it. The shops that the article said worked on the exterior were XMP and Ratical Automotive of San Juan Capistrano. The other is from a Mopar Muscle and a guy just took his new Challenger and made it into a vert. The place that did this I know is in Florida which isn't too helpful unless you REALLY want to do this. That place was Convertible Builders in High Springs, Florida. The article that is from is August 2010 of Mopar Muscle. Hope all this helps.

Yes, there was a Cobra (95 if I recall) that had a completely removable hardtop. VERY few made, but pretty cool. I'd imagine a skilled shop could modify your roof to become a removable hardtop if the targa idea doesn't work out.

I think it'd be cool to have a T-top or targa top. I'd personally go with T-top to retain at least a little structural rigidity without needing to go all the way to a cage, but either or is sweet. Definitely different.

I think with a mod like that very good SFCs would be a must and you would still probably see some flexing. Not sure what the specific differences are between a vert unibody and a coupe unibody but I am sure there are some.

I always loved the thought of a targa top on these cars. They would've looked really awesome IMO with that option.

Ya I remember seeing a couple cars a while back with targa's. One was a red saleen and there was a pretty good discussion
going on about it. I think they would look good with one. And I believe it was a JMS targa as well.

I am planning on targa-topping mine, I guess Im going to have to find someone to custom make one because ive searched for like 2 years now and cant find anything since JMS went out of business
