My tranny is being a bitch lately and I've decided that I'm going to go the route of the 3550. Only problem is, I can't find a place that still sells them. They all say this tranny is not for sale anymore or this tranny has been updated to the TKO 500 and 600. Any leads?? Also, about how much should I be paying for a new one? My budget for it is about $1,000.

Any info is welcome,

Thanks,
Brandon

$1000 will get you a used one with some extra's. Since you should be replacing your clutch while your there, i'd look for a tremec tko. Their stronger and have a 26 spline input shaft. Check out www.corral.net in the drivetrain section and you should find a few.

Thanks man, lots of good stuff there. Question, would I need to replace the clutch? Mine is a brand new KC, so will it fit? Only got ~500 miles on it, so I'd like to keep it

Then you can't get a tremec tko, you'd have to get the regular tremec 3550.

The regular 3550 isn't made anymore, so reserves of new ones is running low. You either need to find a place still selling a few remaining 3550's or get a TKO instead.

The 3550 is outdated anyway. The new factory installed T-3650 in the Mustang GT is actually a stronger trans..too bad it's 4.6L only.

They make a tko500 with a 10 spline but its around 1600. I sold my 3550 for 700 used, with a shifter. If you can afford it step up into the tko you'll be happier.

Yeah, the TKO price is just really pushing it. I might just go ahead and do it, since I know I'll be regretting it if I don't.

Thanks for the replies,
Brandon

What are the first gear differences between the TKO and the 3550?

check out corral.net as mentioned before. About 6 months ago, I got the following for $1850 on corral:
1. Pro-Motion TKOII (26 spline input)
2. McLeod Scattershield
3. Steeda shifter
4. Aluminum d/s
5. Cross-member
6. McLeod clutch/pp
7. Pro-motion extended clutch fork

It only had about 60 miles on it when I got it and it has been great. Good luck.

The gears are the same. The main differences is the tko has a 26 spline input shaft as opposed to the 3550's 10 spline. The tko also has a 31 spline output shaft as opposed to the 28 spline on the 3550.

I understand how you feel since you have a near brand new clutch already in the car.

1st Gear in the Stock T5 is 3.35, I know the aftermarket T5s are like 2.90ish which sucks! I would try to find one that has gearing close to the stocker.

STOCK:
1st - 3.35
2nd - 1.99
3rd - 1.34
4th - 1.00
5th - .68

He asked about the gear difference between a 3550 and a tko. They are the same. First gear in a tremec is 3.27. First in the t5z is 2.95.
