Im new over at this side of stangnet. I usually post over on the classic forum but I am looking to build/rebuild and engine for a late model or possible a classic. Which block should I start with? Are there different kinds of 302's? What about 351s? I dont mind if it is a new or used block. Also how much will this all run me? I really dont want to spend more than 2K on it. is that possible? Thanks

Well Im not sure what block I want or need thats why Im asking but I am looking for crazy amounts of horsepower. I was thinking about buying an foxbody 5.0 but the ones I found were 130,000+ miles. I am looking to put some performance mods on the engine but I dont want it to blow after I put 2K in mods on it. I want a good base to start with before I get myself into this. Im not looking for more than 500hp. more like 300hp but have the potential to go up to 500. This is mostly going to be street car rather than a "PINKS" car. Im not too familiar with the different types of 302s or 351s thats why I am asking. Right now I am leaning toward just rebuilding a latemodel 302.

go with a 331, bored 302, with a nice h/c/i package and then put a 10 psi blower on it and that should land you right where you want to be.

For a good cheap motor just find a salvage Explorer 302 with GT40P heads....usually in the 600-800 range. From there you can hit up the classifieds and with the rest of your 2k you can build a pretty healthy engine for pretty cheap.

With a good intake/carb/exhaust and a matching cam, you can run in the mid 12s if your car will hook off the line and you drive it's balls off.

right now I am thinking about this 93 5.0 with a 5speed with 78xxx miles on it. Should I not bother rebuilding the engine?? How long do these engines last? I always thought they started having drivetrain problems at 130xxx miles.

A stock 5.0 '93 shortblock should easily handle a 300hp combo if that's all you're looking for for now. Beware, '93 5.0's use hyperpathetic pistons whereas '87 thru '92 used forged. With a mild combo you'll be ok. I ran 279rwhp and 309rwtq on my '93 for quite awhile, even road raced it, but once I procharged it I shattered #8 piston shortly thereafter. Hyperpathetic piston can do well if taken care of but they don't handle abuse well IMO.

Ok now I am looking at an 89 5.0, 5speed, 120K miles, stock. It has a little body damage to the front right fender and a little bit under the rear window on the hatch. All for $2000 or less. He says engine runs good and tranny might need clutch in 15K miles. How does that sound??

Mileage is almost meaningless on these engines unless they've been beat to death. My car is an ex Police car....and you know what those cars are put through. The engine has 232k+ on it (before the odometer just clocked out and quit) and i'd estimate that it's nearing or around the 250k mark by now since i've driven it a good amount in the 3 years i've owned it. I've driven the car for what i got it for....i race and beat the crap out of it! It hasn't so much as puffed a bit of smoke in the 3 years i've had it.

Hyper pistons can handle abuse just fine...just not detonation. That same detonation will manhandle forged pistons...it just takes a touch more.
