As I have mentioned in a few other posts recently, I am getting ready to install a 347, with a Comp Cam 274HR or 282HR roller cam.

I plan on reusing my MSD billet distributor and I know I have to change the gear, but Summit has lots of options...bronze, billet steel, steel, iron... with all kinds of different shaft diameters:

I did call Comp, and naturally they say I need their $120 Carbon Composite gear, which is new to me.

So what do I need?

You need a steel gear that fits the MSD distributor. Don't know if it used the same shaft diameter as the stock Ford units. There are two shaft diameters for these, the larger is for the TFI distributors in 302's. The smaller fits the older Duraspark and points units.

MSD can tell you. If they don't offer steel gears, they should.

I am one that remains in the bronze camp after having two failures that involved cam damage and metal shaving inside engine. Bronze require more maintenance (visual checks) but offer me a certain level of security.

Happy Motoring!

MSD offers the steel gear you need but its 75 bux. I think this is an outrageous price for what you are geting and I'd like to know if the Ford part has the same ID so that it will fit. Anyone know ?

That is the cheapest I've seen it. MSD part number 85833.

I don't believe they are the same. The composite gear is a cool piece....It's been working like a champ for me. Wasted a steel gear before I replaced it.
