Which exhaust pipe to choose?

I have a 1988 Mustang GT hatchback with an automatic transmission. I want a deep rumble but not necessary a very loud exhaust. I will purchase a Flowmaster 2-chamber American Thunder cat-back exhaust. My question is which will be better, an X-pipe or an H-pipe. What are the pros and cons to each? I do not need to pass emissions and catylytic converters are optional. I heard that the converters give you more torque. Is that true?

this is one of those questions where people will tell u too use the search function....but i wont be a mean lol......anyways if ur going with a Flowmaster Exhaust and you want that real deep muscle car rumble go with an H-Pipe, an X-Pipe wont be as deep. Now I'm not 100% sure about the whole you loose torque when u delete you cats but if you do get rid of your cats it will be loud, especially when you really get on it.

I went with the Summit H-Pipe which is really inexpensive but requried alittle work to make it fit right.

Supposedly the X produces more power, but there was a thread a few days ago about a guy who thought the bbk-X o/r mixed with the american thunder sounded like crap. Something about sounding like the exhaust was being pushed through a coke can? I have an o/r H and it sounds great.

I used to run BBK equal length shorty's, no cat's, O/R H-pipe, Flows, with normal size chrome tips... As stated above it will idle & have low rumble at low speeds, not as tingy the video clip (may be the cam). However, when you get on it... people MOVE !!!!

I bought into the whole X-pipe give more power & ended up changing my tips to fat mouths for rumble. My personal opinion is the X-pipe causes more air flow to muff's & flowmasters do not sound good on the X-pipe. I am going to change mine back to the H-pipe.

i have bbk equal lenth shorties with a mac prochamber and 2.5 mac flowpaths with dumps. has a nice grunt when u nail it and is not loud goung down the e-way. but its not loud enough for me, i should of went with 3" dumps. plus mac has a sound of its own real nice

Get an H if you want a lower tone or deeper tone

The X usually takes the sound frequency up a touch and makes for a slightly higher pitch exhaust note.

That being said, you can not go wrong with a set of shorties, Off Road H-pipe and some 40 series flowmasters. It's the classic Fox Mustang sound.

Get a cat'd h-pipe. you will eliminate the drone flowmasters is famous for at 2000rpm. it will sound good.

I run BBK Shorty unequal headers, Bassani o/r x-pipe, and flowmasters... used to have a BBK h-pipe... and ill never go back to that after the x pipe... different from everybody elses opinion... but i noticed a much deeper aggressive tone at idle with my xpipe... and when u get on it its unquestionably better... 2000 rpm makes the greatest noise ive heard, and when winding down from high rpms... it makes me wanna spendin a whole day driving down hills in San Francisco.... I know this is the exact opposite from everybody else... but i much prefer the x... dont buy into the power difference though

shortys, o/r h and flow 40s here. car is nice and deep, with just enough rumble and enough scream when i jump on it. cats usually make the exhaust much quieter, and as far as torque...its barely enough to notice. i prefer the sound of catless h because its a nice clean rumble. the x has more of a scream to it, and is more raspy higher in the rpms. if you want the deep rumble without the volume of 40s then look into bassani. they rumble nicely but arent too loud.

i would get a x/pipe... if your looking for performance,,,, i had a off road H and then went to a off road X and it droped .3ths in the 1/4 and 3mph increase... with nothing else changed and with about the same 60ft...

thats what happened with mine... and im a Auto too...

I think its mostly personal preference. Ive had both with several different catbacks and my preference is an O/R X.
