Home of the Florida Gators!
While I'm still debating on wheather or not to keep my 87 GT, Im considering which exhaust I will need if I go through with keeping it and making a Cobra clone. So, if I got a Mac cat back for a LX will that work with a Cobra bumper? If not what is everyone else using?

As far as best sounding get Mac, I have their pro dumps on my 90Gt I absolutley LOVE the sound. If I do keep my 87 thats what I will get again.
Actually I would like to get some Borla's. But there tips are gay, so I would have to get some different tips.

But MAC's do sound badass, I have to agree with you there:nice:

with the cobra the magnaflow tips are one of the best. the cobra tips are lower so if you put lx tips on they will hit the bumper. magnaflow has adjustable height tips so they fit perfectly. any other company with adjustable tip hangers will work good too.

I have the Cobra rear bumper cover on my '91 GT, and ran the MAC cat back with no issues- including touching the bumper. It is the LX kit. When I upgraded to the 3.5" tips, they almost touched, but still cleared. No issues. That's the beauty of MAC's, the two peice tailpipes makes fitting them incredibly easy. Oh- and having had both, the 3.5" tips definately sounded better than the 2.5" did. Everyone noticed a difference.

When I converted my LX to GT style I got a Cervini's cobra bumper and I already had Flowmaster LX SS tips on it. The cutouts on the bumper didn't line up with the tailpipes at all. I took it to my friend's muffler shop and we tried to get them to fit a bunch of different ways, but they never did fit exactly right. (I'm very picky about things like that) I finally just took some Flowmaster GT tailpipes I had, cut off the entire turndown tips off (from the tire back), and welded on some 3.5" x 22" SS slash-cut tips I bought from someone on Ebay. The fit is great now and centered in the cutouts perfectly.
The moral to this story.... it's alot harder to get tailpipes aligned right with the cobra bumper than with either the LX or GT bumpers. It can be done though.
Hope this helps!

Ok. here's the scoop on the blasted tailpipes (seems to be some confusion). LX style pipes require LONGER hangers for the tail pipes if you have a Cobra rear. The Cobra bumpercover sets a inch or two too low but w/ long (not stock) hangers you should be fine. Also, it's not too hard to line up the pipes to fit. you just have to line em up before you do your soldering, etc. I watched the exhaust guy do mine, and it was pretty straight foward. It's best to get it on a rack though so you can walk under it and really see how it's lining up. If you're doing it yourself it may be a little more difficult. (my bumper cover is from Cervinis)
