Or are they both stupid?
I heard a new federal law passed requiring cats or imposign 2500$ fines.
I can get a BBK shorty H pipe w/ cats for free-to-cheap. I may or may not be able to buy L/T's for cheap, or at all.
IF I CANNOT or DO NOT get L/T's, which would be easier?

1.) Buy and weld in aftermarket cats, then buy the air pump tubes, and re-weld in an air tube to the H-pipe, that was cut off at the bung and welded over?

or

2.) Take the catted H-pipe, nad my O/R H pipe, and splice the two together ?
As in, cut and weld the two together and hope it works??? (God, I'm such a retard...)

But really, though, am I just wasting my time with these palns and delaying the inevitable - buying a catted H pipe and the air tube?

Thanks as always,
J

also, what are opinions/thoughts on a Catco 2 1/4" Catalytic H pipe for $300? I've heard the whole debate on the need or lack thereof for 2 1/2" midpipe on a relatively stock engine, but any thoughts on the piece itself?

Buy a new setup with cats in it alreay. It will be cheaper.

You will have to decide if you want to run LT's or Shorties first.

I am interested about the law you heard of... I haven't seen anything in the paper, and in my area I am sure I would know.

Cool.... Being the motor city and that everyone here has a modded car in their basement, it'll be interesting to see. (Time to buy some stocks in the converter business)

There's nothing new about the Federal emissions laws. The cat law has been around for decades. In fact it has been against Federal law to tamper or remove any emissions equipment since the first PCV valve was introduced back in the 60s. Those laws are powerless because there is no one to enforce them. The Federal government cannot enforce them for 2 reasons. First, the states refuse to enforce them for the Feds and you can bet your bottom dollar the feds have tried to strongarm them into doing it. Second, the Constitution forbids a federal police force and that is exactly what the Feds need to enforce the laws themselves.

At this point in time the only recourse the Feds have is to go after manufacturers who ship the non compliant equipment out of state and then only if the manufacturer knows that the equipment will be used to circumvent existing emissions equipment on road vehicles. It's tough to prove.

well, I suppose that's a good thing then...
Not sure if I want to stick it out and wait to see if I'll be the first one in my area to take the 2,500 hit or pony up and drop $400 on a catted H pipe...

I don't know about you, but my car without catalist's is very smelly! I have been thinking about running some hi-po cats just for my own satisfaction.

Thanks for the info Jay!

I "passed" last year w/o cats... and the sniffer was in the pipes and everything. Granted, a buddy of mine was working the machine, but somehow...it passed!
I have to see if I can find out where he's working now....
