I just became the proud new owner of a 65 coupe Screaming yellow, with a nice black <vynal ?> top. The engine is a 351w.

Now so far the engine has
edelbrock Preforma 351-w Intake
edelbrock Preforma 600cm Carb /w electric choke #1406
Hedmans Long Tubes Headers.
MSD Ignition, Coil.

The Heads are what I am wondering about. I was told that they were "shved heads" but I think they may be the stock steel heads..not exactly sure yet. If I want to replace them, what would be a good set of heads to toss on ?

Victor JR ? Trickflow Twisted ? Do I need to upgrade the intake and carb ?

I am comming out of a 2003 Cobra, STOLEN and I found this car in really good shape. Was to good of a deal to pass up, so Old School is the way I am going now. I will admit though, I have not seen a carb engine in a looooooooong time. Doing my homework to catch up, and any info I can get would be very helpful for this noob owner !

Thanx in advance.

Really depends on what your goals are for the car. Nice street cruiser with good gas mileage but a little power, street car that will race once in a while, serious street car with no gas mileage, or race? A nice bolt on set of heads that would help alot would be the performer or performer rpm heads for a mild windsor. Do you plan on running different gears, converter, big cam, things like that??

More on the lines of a street car that can handle a race every now again. I use to take my Cobra to morosso every now again, so I guess I am looking for something around 400ish rwhp. Heh something that can stand up to the tradition the stangs put down. As always, I sure hell do not want any ricers to take me out..man I could never live that down driving a classic Stang.....

AFR 185cc should do it for ya. But make sure the cam is up to the task of 400hp.

Stick with choices that have no larger than 1.94 intake valves, unless you know for sure that the pistons that are in the motor now can handle larger ones. 1.94's are plenty large for most street applications.

Any of the aftermarket heads (AFR, Edelbrock, TW, holly, Brodex) will perform well & make power. Need to match the combonation & have a goal for the power level you are wanting, along with how high you want to rev the engine. As stated, just check piston to valve clearance.

400 at the wheels is gonna take some effort and money. A power-adder is probably in your future unless you stroke it or seriously reduce its streetability.

One of the problems is that to get the 400rwhp figure you're gonna have to really rev it up and the big Windsor's are not known for their revability.

I'm not saying you can't do it by any means, you definitely can but you're gonna want ~500hp at the flywheel to get there and that is gonna cost you.

The stock heads are iron not steel, and not only do they have to go but so does that carb and that intake, you wont even get close with them. Get the 185s (maybe 205s), build the crap outta the bottom end, get a cam with 0.6 lift and ~300 duration, a tall single-plane manifold and a Holley 850 and you'll be close. Just give up on any thoughts of air conditioning or power brakes. If you have an automatic it will need a full performance build and a stall in the 3500 range.

Thanx for the replies guys. I am looking into my parts list now, and I guess the first thing I need to do, is a get a baseline of what the engine puts out right now. So its off to a dyno soon. With this type of info comming in, I will soon get a better understanding of what this type of setup is capable of.

one good thing about having an old mustang...
they are a hell of a lot lighter - 2500-2600lbs for a 66 -then a 2003 mustang which is somewhere around 3300lbs.

if your not to comfortable with a carb and want to go back to EFI there is plenty of info on this site to do the swap

BTW --- sucks your cobra got stolen!

A custom cam (or well-chosen manufactured unit), ditch the intake in favor of a PerformerRPM or Wieland Stealth. AFR185s or Trickflows, make sure the compression is nice and high, and I could see 420hp and about 375RWHP. Add a small shot of spray, and volia!

400RWHP is going to be tricky for an N/A street 351W though. I suppose you could go for a 750cfm carb and a Wieland Xcellorator intake to gain a bit more street-friendly HP.

PS: You could always go EFI with a Trickflow intake and 5.0 MAF system. Then, strap on a Vortech S-strim

Heads

I just dynoed the 306 going in my 66 Fastback and I used the AFR 185 heads.

Comp Cams 274 XE roller cam. 650 Edelbrock carb. Roller rockers. Air Gap intake.

10.5 compression

408 HP and 398 torque.

Sounded great on the dyno.
