depends what you like. if your privileged enough for a stang now, then you gotta ask yourself, are you a fox man or an sn95 kinda guy.
if fox you should get a 4cyl turbo or maybe an SVO, my neighbor has an SVO and it is real nice, holds its own with alot of 5.0's.
or if your an sn95 guy, get a 6. im about to get my 16 year old son a 6 cylinder manual, just havent decided 04 or 05.

It all depends how much you want to spend, what your parents would be comfortable with you driving, if you would like something newer or older, a warranty or no warranty.
If you want to learn to drive on a mustang, you might want to look at a manual 94-98 V6 with higher miles, they are extremely cheap.

If you want a V-8 and are on a budget, '87 - 90's are great cars. They were some of the best years for the 5.0

i think you should go for a 94ish GT. they are not the most powerful GTs in the world, but at least it is a V8 and responds well to mods since it is a 5.0
you can find them for a pretty cheap price now and should satisfy you until you are a better driver and have some more experience under your belt. then, you can move up to a more powerful GT or Cobra

When do you get your license..? If you have allot/decent of time before you get it, then i suggest possibly an old 65-71 v8. Find one thats in need of restoration, for say anywhere between 3-5K, then restore it yourself with someone who has some knowledge about cars. When your done, you'll have a kick butt car thats a classic, that girls will stare at, and a car that you truly will care for and respect because YOU did the work to fix it. Another good choice would be sn95's with a 5.0. Newish body style, and old school 5.0. (was it 94/95?)
Regardless of what car you drive, its key to respect is power. A muscle car is worthless if you cant handle it or wreck it.

I had a 96 V6 with a slushbox auto. It taught me a lot about mustangs but I hated it. I always wanted a V8. I loved the sound. If you're just looking to get into mustangs a 94-98 V6 with a MANUAL is a good car. However, if you can afford it, a 87-95 V8 auto or manual would be awesome. You can go fast in these w/o breaking the bank. Your parents will probably get you a V6 or a Honda. My first car was an '87 Nissan Sentra 4 door econobox and I hated it. It would do 140 mph but it would take about 3 miles to get there and be almost to redline. Probably not the safest or smartest thing I did but that car got the **** torn out of it in about a year before I got my 96 V6 stang.

I'd personally get together a list of Stangs, then call your insurance agent (or have your folks do it). At your age, and if you are expected to chip in for insurance, this could be a factor for ya. It sure was when I turned 16--worked min wage for car payments, insurance and gas (if I was lucky / had anything left over). 
Good luck, and make sure you don't get ANY tickets until you hit your 20's or you'll be paying for it (literally). You'll lose hundreds of dollars--if not more--a year which could be used better elsewhere (paying off the car, taking girls on dates, saving for college, doing stuff to your car, etc., you name it). - Mega

I got a few tickets when i was 16-18 and ended up paying for them big time for a few years, car insurance for a young guy on a stang with a v8 is not a pretty sight if you want full coverage, I would start with a 6 it will be cheaper and be a better car to learn how to drive in. Why? They're cheap, easy to mod, and they'll really get you learning about mustangs and mustang performance, tuning and racing. Foxes are great places to start. Since your young, you'll be able to save up your week-to-week paycheck, spend it on parts for the car, then spend the weekend working on the car or racing the car.

Start off with a V-6. Get used to the car and driving in general, then step up to something a little "peppier" after you get some experience under your belt.
IMO Inexperienced drivers and high HP cars = tickets, accidents or even worse, fatalities.

Learn to drive on a small 4 cyl. I remember I did some stupid things with my 4cyl that would have killed me with the extra 300 HP I have now....
Move up slowly, I know I'm only 20 and still inexperienced compared to some of the oldtimers but even with 4 years behind the wheel I think the cobra is almost too much power for me to handle....
