BCA* makes the TOB for Ford
*BCA = Bearing Corp of America (used to be Bowers) and they make ALL kinds of bearings

I already tried adjusting the firewall adjuster. I only got a different pedal location for the friction point of the clutch. The chirping sound is the same. It's actually tolerable at idle, but worsens with speed. Deceleration in gear seems to make it chirp even more!!
What's the best solution?

He owns his own speed shop and prefers working on F-bodies and Mustangs. I already took it back to him, and he heard the noise. He told me to try adjusting the firewall adjuster. He also said that TOB noise is typical with these transmissions (I have a TR3650), as well as the 3550 and T-5.
He said he would install another new TOB (not for free, of course), but suspected that I would just be back to see him in another month or two again with the same problem. That's why I'm just looking for a reputable, almost surefire way of fixing this problem. Do you think it might actually be the use of an aftermarket clutch that is the problem (I have McLeod, which is good), or the use of a particular brand of throwout bearing, or is this just a design issue that can't really be permanently fixed?
Guess I'll have to get headers and an O/R h-pipe to mask the sound

If you have feedback in the clutch, it could be your flywheel has too much runout. You can lift up the car and check the clutch fork and see if its going back and forth. New flywheel or resurfaced? Will it do it if the tranny is in gear with the clutch in?

If it does it when driving in gear, it couldnt be the pilot bearing-the input shaft wouldnt be spinning in it.
Sounds like the TOB was adjusted tight up against the clutch, meaning its spinning 100% of the time, and now its given up the ghost. Not uncommon. Check the adjustment on the clutch cable.
Get the clutch to engage about 3 inch off the floor. The TOB is "supposed" to spin all the time. From what Ive read its designed to ride against the clutch, infact its supposed to have some preload on the pressure plate. You really cant set it to where it stops spinning completely unless you set a large amount of slack in it (ive tried), but it will spin less if youve got a small amount of slack. Chances are the noise is from the TOB spinning. Some people spray lithium grease into the TOB to keep them alive longer...Stanged78 said:Yes, it does go away when I step on the clutch. If the TOB was adjusted tight up against the clutch, what can I do about it? I know little about transmissions/clutches, and didn't do the work myself. You said to check the adjustment on the clutch cable...I have a firewall adjuster and have been trying to find the "sweet spot" using that. Haven't found it yet. I kept turning the adjuster counterclockwise (so that it protrudes farther from the firewall into the engine compartment), which made the clutch travel increase so that the friction point of the clutch now occurs near the top of the clutch pedal travel. Is there too much pressure on the TOB at this setting? Should I have the firewall adjuster turned the other way? Is the noise from the TOB spinning, or vibrating back and forth?
