Hey guys,

I just recently had richmond 4.10 gears, an 03/04 cobra differential, and 31 spline axles installed on my car. I noticed that when I drive in a high gear at a low speed, I hear a whine. Is this normal? Does anyone else notice this?

thanks for the input guys i really appreciate it. the guy that did the job on my gears does great work, but i was just wondering if this was common for anyone else. the guy that did the work is a performance instructor at UTI. the whine isnt that loud thats its annoying, but i can hear it is the music is low on and im driving in a higher gear at a low speed.

anyone have richmond gears and not have a whine??? any input would be appreciated.

I have put 'em in with no whine. Most likely the pinion depth is set wrong so that the pinion/ring gear do not engage at the right point. Second alternative is incorrect backlash, which will make the teeth engage either too deeply or not deeply enough, again setting up a whine...

Pinion depth is set by shims on the front of the pinion gear and many cheat a bit here because it is a pain in the ass to set it, get it wrong, have to pull the bearing off the shaft (it is a tight interference fit) to change the shims... Backlash is adjusted by the shims on either side of the diffferential carrier between the bearings and the carrier housing.

A proper gear installation should not whine. Period.

I would have the installer double check the specs.

I have FRPP 4.10s and have no whine.

If set properly, they should not whine. If they do, you need to take it back and have them do it correctly.

I have Summit Racing 4.10's, installed by a 30 year ASE certified mech... they whine also.

Everything checked out during the install, so it may be the brand gears themselves.

If I have Fords 4.10 gear and they whine after a install, and I have like 2,000 miles on them, will they be able to reset the gears to fix it?

My FRPP 3.73's do not whine and i didn't use an install kit either. How do you like the new setup? I've got the same sitting in my trunk right now but with 3.73's that im hoping to get installed this comming week.

just tell all your buddies that arn't car people you got turbo's in your differential, they will never know. tell them the whine is the turbos spooling
