Ok, heres the deal. Towards the end of July I had to make a 3 hour drive from where I live. At the start of the drive, 5th gear started making a weird noise. Come to find out, when I got back home, I was low on tranny fluid. I filled it back up with the reccomended lubricant, but I think it was too late. It whines really loud now.

Heres the symptoms: 1,2,3,and 5th gear whine really loud. 4th gear is completely silent. Not sure why. When im sitting still, with the clutch out, the transmission makes a small rattling noise, and when i push the clutch in, the noise goes away. I can confirm that it is coming from the tranny, it isnt a TO bearing or anything.

Does my whole transmission need rebuilt? Or is this maybe some kind of bearing or something that I can just replace? I might have to just tear the tranny apart to find out, but I thought I would ask here first to see if anyone knew. Thanks for the help.

My third gear whines. Sounds like a roots style supercharger... that I unfortunately don't have.

Rebuilding............Good possibility.

Mine did that a year or two ago. I actually had my blower off the car and my friend still thought it was on my car. Thats how loud it was. Anyway, i was building my house when this happend thus i didnt have time to have it rebuilt. I purchased a new one. When i got the old one out, it was obvious. The input shaft had a horrible wobble. Guess a bearing or bushing took a crap.

Since the input shaft was gone i assume that the other gears were worn sharp cause they ALL whined. You may have to have yours rebuilt.

Good luck

I'd say ditto on the rebuild. Had one that did it before, only to find out when I changed the fluid that pretty much everything in the trans was worn out. Looked like someone poured glitter into my trans fluid. I could've kept driving it longer than I did, but since it was my daily driver, I opted for a new T-5. For the record, it did whine like that for around 2 months before I had the money to replace it, but I'd keep driving to a minimum if possible. It's a huge pain when you lose a gear

Learn to deal with the whine.

WHen you are low on fluid, the bearings starve and beging to overheat. The main culprit is the bearing between the mainshaft and input shaft. It starves for fluid when the level is low.

It gets hot and literally scores the mainshaft. That's why you hear noise in ever geat but 4th. In 4th gear the input and mainshaft are 1:1, so nothing is turning against east other.

You'll need a full rebuild kit and main need a new mainshaft...which is $250 new.

I lucked out and found a good used mainshaft for $60 in the classifieds.

i just recently took my t5 out for a rebuild. It whined like a supercharger and i always got looks like wtf is that lol. The previous owner never fixed the trans leak and drove it for a while like that. All 3 of the shafts are damaged badly so now im getting a different trans.
