While on my way home tonight from a freinds place it started to sleet, no biggey eh? anyway i got to thinking, how bad are 5.0 stang's in the rain? i have very ****ty E-sigma tires on mine and i will be driving mine this winter too. would it be a good idea for me to invest in some snow tires or anything along these lines? if so what tires do you have on yours?

The foxbody mustang is probably one of the worst vehicles in the rain or snow you can drive, no abs, no traction control, no wieght on the rear tires.

It is very advised to get winter tires, don't let cost be a factor, because if you crash your car will be worth nothing.
I managed to make it 7 years with mine as a DD in NJ, and i am very lucky to of gotten through the winters.
Believe it or not, studies show that using winter tires actually saves you money in the long run, based on tire wear, and the fact that they only see half a year.

Mine's not a daily driver but its horrible in the rain.
I had to drive it a bit today in a little snow/slush and it kept spinning the tires.

If you are a good aware driver and you have half decent tires on your car you will be fine. I daily drove mine for 4 years and never spun out in the rain or had any troubles in heavy down pours. I never drove in any kind of ice or snow so I don't know how a mustang would act in that situation.

5.0's are terrible in crappy weather.

I daily drove mine in the snow for 3 years and hated it.

Now with my '03 GT DD, i still avoid all snow driving despite it being somewhat tamer with ABS, traction control and a longer wheelbase.

Snow tires will help. A lot of us drive around on performance z-rated tires which are not all-season tires, so temps under 32 degrees, those tires tend to grab like hard plastic tires. Can be dangerous.

Buy a cheap set of 15" wheels and find some narrow snow tires off craigslist

People have driven in snow for decades without ABS, FWD, etc. A fox will be fine if, like said above, "Buy a cheap set of 15" wheels and find some narrow snow tires off craigslist".

i figure if im gonna buy snow tires ill just use my 10 holes for them and grab a set of ponys for summer/spring...

If you are going to use your 10-holes, get the narrowest tire you can fit... 205/65/15


If you are going to buy them...get blizzaks.

But seriously, check craigslist. People sell them cheap on there all the time. They put them on for the winter, then sell the car and keep the tires and wait til this time of year to unload them cheap.

I'm talking to a guy on CL that has four snow tires for my GT for $200

foxes are absolute garbage for rain and snow. i dd mine (well not really any more, since i take the bus) but its my only car now. i managed last year, but i never went over 60 km/h most of the time, and in 5th gear. got stuck a lot. i went for a drive the other night, with new gears, and new tires, and i was getting sideways and spinning out at 40km/h, in 4th gear at 1100rpms. this is with no snow on the road. there must have been a light frost or something, but nothing i could see.

edit: +1 on narrow tires if you're driving in snow. wide tires act like snowshoes, while narrow tires punch through the snow better.

The Capri has been DDed for many years. It has seen many rain storms. I've learned how to drive it without spinning the tires too much (with 3:73s). Ok, now I have this Notch... and it's got 4:10s....

Time to relearn how to drive in teh rain.

Dude, buy a winter beater for snow. Find an older civic or accord or something for $1500 or so.

Why anyone would let salt eat away at their nice fox is beyond me.

I haven't had any problems in the rain. I'm on almost slick BFG T/As on the rear. I've never driven in snow. I don't expect any kind of performance in the weather though, so I don't "drive it like I stole it".

It is not only Foxes that don't like the wet my old 69 Coupe and my 73 Mach where not fond of wet either, Mustangs have always been very nose heavy, weight bias to the front. Any Mustang I owned was a daily driver, just drive sane in the wet and make sure your tires are in good condition. Course that don't account for the idiots driving around you!

why buy snow tires when you could just buy a tempo for the same money....did you not just do a bunch of body work to your car? why would you winter drive it. You are a new driver and lets face it you will screw around doing donuts and seeing how far you can control a fishtail up the road...GET a TEMPO or some other cheap car or even a 4X4

I remember when I first got the fox, it was the first manual car I had ever driven. Unfortunately I drove it to work and by the time I had to come back it was pouring like mad. At virtually every stoplight I would spin the tires on accident. So to sum it up:

Torquey 5.0 + 3.55's + king cobra clutch + bald ass dunlops + huge downpour + 5 speed newbie = FUN!!!

Fortunately I did'nt have the blower at the time otherwise I would'nt have made it back home.

my car is by no means "nice yet" i have no choice, i either drive this or dont drive at all. im just hoping for a "light" winter this year.

i DD mine for almost a year, and one whole winter..the 15 or so days i had to drive to school in the snow it sucked, i couldent get up any hills (there's a few on the way to HS) without bouncing off the curbs, which would move me about a foot, bounce, move, bounce, move..i was getting passed by old ladies in honduh's..now i have an 89 toyota pickup on 35" Mud Terrains and open diff's. I would be set if i had a rear locker but at least i wont be getting stuck on the pavement again
