While I have the car apart and the engine out, I'm thinking of spending the extra $75 for the kit to put the battery in the trunk. I know a lot of people have this kit; what are some advantages/drawbacks I should know about it? The weight distribution advantage is obvious.

Right now I have all the wiring out of the car, along with the interior, engine, and transmission. I have a new painless harness that I'm about to put in, then in goes the new head unit, speakers, 2 amps, and subwoofer. Then the interior, then the engine, transmission, and new 4.11 limited slip rear end. Should be fun when it's over. But anyway, right now would be the time to do such a kit and I'm thinking with the amps back there it might be convenient to have the battery there too. Thoughts?

I have my battery in the trunk...it won't fit up front anymore. :D

I had a summitt box, but it sucked. It was hard to open, It was hard to change the battery or use jumper cables. So for now it is riding around on a plastic tray with a bolt-down kit holding it in place.

hey bro,
I was thinking about doing the same as you. IT is supposed to be real convenient for everyday stuff and give you more room to work on the engine.. always nice. I am pretty sure that the weight transfer will give you minimally better handling. But I imagine if you are putting subs in there it will be much cheaper on the whole amp wiring kit. Can I ask you a question? I got a 66 coupe and I have a couple of 10's and an amp ready to go in. Did you put a carpet kit in the trunk or what? If you did get a carpet kit where did you get it from? thanks man..

Easily done , but skip the kit. Go to walmart, buy a 5.00 battery box for a boat , bolt it in all 4 corners in the trunk. then take the money you saved a go to your local welding supply store and buy a 20 arc welding whip. This works great for acrrying the juice up front with little voltage drop.

i was thinking about putting the battery in the trunk also. i was reading on a site that it isnt a good idea because there isnt any air circulation in the trunk and batteries need that. is this true or whats the deal with this?

I have a Jegs billet battery mount.

It's easy to access the battery, and I think it looks alot cooler considering the optima batteries are pretty nice looking batteries too.

I may do that. That's SO pretty. I have the red. But I bought the summit box also. It is junk, but works for now. A draw back for this is you may get problems if you have it in the trunk when you go to the track. You have to have a battery switch. I don't know were you'd put it on a pretty car like that. They do make mounts with sticks that go under the car.

I had a switch that replaced one of my reverse lights, since then I've removed it though.

battery in trunk

My BOSS 429 has a battery in the trunk and was designed to be in the trunk. Just a couple of things to keep in mind;
The positive cable will wind up being about 175 inches long and must be protected where it passes through sheet metal. Use rubber grommets to protect the cable at those points.
The trunk floor is not level with the ground so end closest to the tail light will have to be shimmed up.
the hydrogen gas must be vented somehow. On the BOSS 9, the battery caps are vented through a tube routed to a hole in the trunk floor.
I would recommend the installation of a remote disconnect switch to shut down the battery when you are not with the car.
