Well, im looking into building a stock 69 hood from carbon fiber. I have done some carbon fiber work in the past and posted it but nothing quite as bit as a hood. Im currently getting a vaccuum pump and some other stuff to do this hood. I figure if Im gonna spend a ton of time buildind a mold for the hood I might be able to help some other people out in the process.

Now, if you are interested in carbon fiber stuff, are you more interested in looks or weight savings? A simple single layer of carbon fiber backed with fiberglass would be a TON cheaper than a full carbon fiber hood. I have a 3" cowl hood for a 69stang and it weights about 40lbs or so. A full carbon fiber hood should weigh less than 10lbs. The only note on this, these must be used with a prop rod. These hoods are so light, any hood spring (fiberglass or steel springs) could crack the hood in 1/2. Carbon fiber is VERY strong but too much leverage on the back end of the hood can break it.

Anyways, let me know if you guys are interested. Im plannin on doing my decklid and hood and possibly that 3" cowl hood. I always ahve a 68 stock and 66 stock hood layin around if anyone is intersted in those. :nice:

Whats the approximate price on something like that? I have a 66... and always toyed with the idea of carbon fiber

man...price offhand is really hard to say. If there is more interest prices will go down. The thing taht kills me is the fact I have to mold it. Simple materials addup really quick. A normal carbon fiber hood with a fiberglass backing made by VIS for newer stangs goes for about $400. A fiberglass hood from someone like carhoods.com (like my 69 3" cowl) goes for damn near $700. I would like to say I could build a carbon fiber (completely carbon fiber for $650) and a cf/fiberglass combo for $450

thos are rough guessses...Im gonna have to build my own hood and see how much time and materials goes into it. Stuff like gelcoat and mold release adds up. Hell, a resin trap is $300, vaccuum pump is around $300 and gel coat gun is $150. Materials and equpment adds up fast

Yes, I'm interested. I'm currently running a stock 351W shaker, but it's pretty rough. In order to make it fit under the hood I had to use a torker II. My engine should be using a Vic Jr. I like the look of the shaker though. Anyway, I would either need a hole cut out for my current set-up, or I would need a cowl. I would prefer the cowl to be as low as possible, 1" would be nice, 2" would be OK.

i was looking into some carbon fiber parts for my 1965 money pit and mustangplus can make anything they make out of fiberglass out of carbon fiber as well.

but they are pretty expensive and i figured out the cost to benefit ratio and it made me cry

matt

im not a big fan of mustangs+... they are sorta expensive but you just gotta realize how much it costs to make and how much time. You would be suprised that materials alone will be $300 a hood, then add in time and the fact you ahve to build a mold.

as of right now, I dont have anything to mold off of for a small 1" hood. I would hate to build something then find out 1" isnt big enough. These hoods are going to be done by a techniques called Vaccuum Infusion which yeilds a much higher quality product over standard vaccuum bagging.

I wonder what a mach hood would look like with the blacked out hood treament was replaced by carbon fiber

I'd like to see the results. I've been thinking of doing something similar. For my Senior Design class (for Manufacturing Systems Engineering) we did two carbon fiber skateboards. the first one was 12 layers of carbon fiber. The other one was 24 layers with 3 layers of Kevlar. The 12 layer board was very springy and touched the ground (OOoops) we should have done samples and done bending tests and whatnot, but I was leading a group of 4, myself included, and we had 1 guy that was 100% dead weight... so we did what we could. I think the 27 layer board won't flex at all but we haven't stood on it yet. as for cost I think we figured the 12 layer board was $350. Later on we learned that the Mechanical Engineering guys use a honeycomb center on part of their carbon fiber cassied race car. That will help you save on the number of layers you use. Also since we didn't know that you need to lay in busings into the carbon fiber if you want holes, that's something that you should keep in mind. or have a subframe outof maybe aluminm that you lay the carbon fiber on so you don't put any holes in it for the rear hinges.

I saw an article about build molds and what not, one of the many projects I am thinking of. I am interested for two reasons. Strength and fit. Fit because the curing of FG gets so hot. Alos I don't like the idea of a year after paint, the gel coat on FG can crack.

That would look great and would save a lot of weight.

Most of the race weight items that I know of use the C/F for strength with a couple hand layed layers of F/G for stiffness, but the C/F isn't for looks like it tends to be with the ricer crowd. I would think it'd be really tough to do one for the look. I haven't seen any close up pics of the Year One teardrop hood to see how it turned out.

I've got a '65 coupe, I'd like to see pics of it after your done.

A smaller part you could try that would likely sell would be a Boss 429 scoop. You could practice techniques in laying it up for looks and it would be a small enough part to handle more easily.

I would also like to see the end result of the hood, and maybe purchase and review your first product :nice:

hey man...thanks for the encouragement. Im ordering supplies but have to wait for shipping :( Im gonna do a gauge cluster bezel and clock bezel for 69 deluxe interiors first. Im trying a new method called vaccuum infusion. I figure a couple small pieces would be best before I waste $300 in carbon :D

UPDATE!!

What are you more interested in?? Looks or price? I found some 60" carbon fiber and carbon fiber alone runs over $300 then $100 if nomex, $40 in resin + supplies and vacuum bagging. I see costs getting close to $600 without my time and building the mold. A fiberglass setup with carbon fiber on both sides (nice and glossy) would be a LOT cheaper.

Lets put it this way... as long as its lighter than the stock hood, is durable for a few years, and is externally carbon fiber, it doesnt matter if the innards are fiberglass, heck if it makes it stronger and cheaper, why not?

You dont need to paint CF... do you? I mainly want a CF hood to reduce weight, and so that I dont have to worry about painting it when I store my stock hood

well i guess we will see...the first guinea pig is the gauge cluster and clock bezel...then im going to start on a stock hood...

carbon fiber pieces

I am interested in c/f hood for my 67 fastback. It has to be atleast 2.5 cowl hood though. My biggest question is, what happens if you have to do some cleaning up on the hood? I like cowl hoods but can't stand when they fit like crap. Also, I love the look of the Ring Brothers rear valance on the blacked out car they did.
