Why are ppl using AFR's instead of Canfields?

Once again I'd be set on being able to pass emissions legitimately like it does now so I'd be going for this type of cam. It would likely be either custom or they have some very nice off the shelf grinds that will achieve this as well for a 347 setup with the H/C/I setup I have. I'd definitely have to get something bigger than the cam I have now or it would all be a waste of money.
I would be thinking at least 340 rwhp and much more torque.

I'd say you could easily hit 325rwhp with just a cam swap. Those heads seem better than my TW and afr 165's in terms on flow. You'll just need a real cam to see the real benefits. Another good head to consider are the new edelbrocks. My friend is making way more than just about every afr/fti guy in this section with his off the shelf combo in his 94 GT. His only difference is a full point more compression and a fresh 306. He still has shorty headers too  Longtubes would definatly help him a lot. Until last night, the only head that ever beat me on the street was a trickflow, now I can add the new edelbrocks to that list. I've dogged gt40x, a trickflow car, an afr 165 and numerous old edelbrocks. I raced my friends car and it ran damn good, I thought I was gonna get smoked but it was close. He got em once I got him once.

Didn't the AFR's win the head contest( :D ) that mm&ff did in every category. They out flowed every one that’s way people use them more. I do agree that a set of canfields on a strocker would be :nice: for that matter so would a set of brodix. I guess it all depends on what you plan to do with your car.

I believe they the 165cc and the 185cc won. The 205cc and 225cc, got their asses handed to them by the trickflow R series.

Yea the TEA PORTED Rs made a whole ass handing 5 more average flywheel horse power. Which is what? 3 RWHP?

With that said, if I built a 400+inch motor I would probably use the R heads.

This bench racing and magazine racing has to stop! You cant have "too much head" for a 302 with in reason obviously. Its ALL in the combination! If I were forced to use an afr head for a 302/306 build up it would ONLY be a 185. They will make more than a 165. Some of you bench racers gotta stop worrying about flow #'s. Tell me why my friends 306 with new edelbrock heads, an off the shelf comp 270xe and a tfs street intake with junk shorty headers makes more than just about everyone in this thread? LOL Its all in the combination people. Fwiw, when I bought my trickflows 3 years ago, they were $935 and shipping for the entire order was $4.95. NO other head came close to that value ;)

I agree with not being able to have too big of a head BUT u will still loose the low end power that say a lower flowing head like the 165, since u can put a cam in that isnt in the upper power range, but still complents the 165's airflow characterists. is this correct?

No, your wrong. Thats why I said you use a custom cam, thats the 'brains' of an engine. You could put the 'big' head on and run a junk cam like an e303 and you'll get pathetic gains and make junk ower.

so are you saying with that combo that ur friend has, it kicks ass in lower rpm?

and what about paul... maybe it's all in the driver, well a lot of it

You talking about my friend I posted about with the edelbrock headed 306? His sub 3k end isnt as good as mine, but still good. Like I said he still has shorty headers, so they WILL bring his low end back as well as more power through out. Killercanary proved dyno #'s dont tell the whole story, but no one with similar parts has come close to him. Driving and tuning have a lot to do w/ that.

HUH? lol Whats that mean? (and i know its sarcasm)
50% sarcasm, 50% frustration. I hate "which head is best" threads, because there is no correct answer -- it turns into a flamewar (and usually an AFR-bashing contest). I also wish people would quit racing dynos (they're not all that aerodynamic anyway :)). Peak horsepower is just a pretty number, it falls way short of telling the whole story. If it were that easy, there would be a clear "winner" and nobody would own any head but that one. All of our combos would be identical.

i agree that the canfields are too much head for a NA 302...the key is for sure efficiency and VELOCITY of the air flow...It's not always about the ammount of airflow. I also agree with Snoozer in that I dont feel the trick flows are too big. I think they are towards the big end of the spectrum but not over the edge, i feel the same about the 185's...I think its just that not a lot of people put 185's on their NA 302's so we dont see truly how well they work with different combos...this is just my 2 cents though...i could be wrong...

Edit: and i agree with you very much Dave. The "best" debates also dont just apply to heads, they apply to everything. Exhaust, cams, headers, mass air meters, throttle body's....its all the same.

soooo...... are you saying AFR is the winner? :p  :jester:

40 percent drivetrain loss?

not a math major are we

I have this to say.

I could give a rats ass about lowend. the only time my car sees below 4000 is after i am breaking at the end of the track.

some of you guys need to do less worrying and internet racing and whining about losing bottomend, and go race!

I do what i have got to do to win and thats where my car is where it is today.

if i listened to half the people on the forums and didnt follow my own path i dont know where i would be.

why do you really need all this low end? so your car FEELS fast when you are daily driving? wouldnt you rather own people in a race than FEEL fast?

maybe you wouldnt but i would.

Snoozer your point is very valid....but idk about you but when i drive around town a rarley shift above 3k but i enjoy the low end torque while doing that....its on thing at the track where yes, your car is below 4k MAYBE when you first launch(street tires) and then slowing down.....your point makes perfect sense

Anthony

if i went and got an hci and lost my bottom end i think gas milage would severly suffer and since i drive 40+ miles a day that can't be good. sure it would be better for the track but i guess during these debate we probably should specify what the car is for

is that your dd or do you have a beater car snoozer?

btw, unless i'm trying to pass or just drive faster, i usually stay below 2500 maybe even 2300
