I'm picking up my car from the trans shop tomorrow finally (after 3 1/2 weeks.) He told me to be sure I took overdrive off when racing. I've heard this before but I thought it was more of a performance issue. He said its really tough on the bands since its going from 4,500 to 1,800 rpm. Can anyone explain this? Is the overdirve band really weak? And if so why didn't he beef it up?

why he didnt beef it up?

cuz you didnt pay for it probably

why shouldnt you drive in O/D while pounding on it?

cuz OD bands will say BYE BYE.

nothing really to explain... just something that happens unless you upgrade the bands at least to kevlar style.

He upgraded the hell out of everything else to the tune of $1000 in parts. He said he made everything really tight and that why I shouldn't race with overdrive. Does that make sense?

I gotta talk to him when I pick it up tomorrow, its only $25 for the Kevlar overdrive band. Why wouldn't you pick that? The $25 is well worth it if you ask me. I'm gonna be pissed if he didn't get the kevlar band. I told him I was racing this and its a performance trans shop.

You should not race in overdrive yes it is harder on bands and etc and you would be slow as heck so why bother, should not max out third unless you got way to much gear, my 2 cents Dan

should be able to get around 112mph out of yoru car with 373's and a 26" tall tire.
In 3rd gear!

If you need more mph, then go to a bigger tire, or smaller gear.. No need for 4th gear

Art Carr is the only company that I know of that will warranty overdrive under full power on the transmissions they build. I do not, however, recommend them as a company due to several failures on an AOD & converter built for a TT Fox car I've helped a friend with.

why do i think your tranny guy shafted you?

what $1000 in parts, i want to see EVERY mod listen here.

Ask him for full reciepts and parts manifest.

If he put $1k in parts, that thing SHOULD be bulletproof.

Some reason I dont buy it at all.

it doesnt really matter if he didnt upgrade overdrive, simply because it doesnt need to be...you shouldnt be using it while racing anyways....it will just help slow you down, so if your worried he didnt do it...do what you should be doing anyways and just turn it off....or get a 5speed

Even a Kevlar band won't hold up on repeated WOT O/D shifts. It's frustrating I know, but if you think about how O/D differs from the other gears, it's basically just a band that tightens up to a rotating mass and trys like hell to hook up to it. Very similar to how brakes work. Even the best brake pads on the market have to be replaced. I wasn't aware that Art Carr waranteed their O/D - I didn't think ANYONE did. Good to know.

My tranny guy will replace any part in my tranny for the price of the part and he'll put anything in it I can afford. Labor is now free - but I have to bring him the tranny (out of the car).

Anthony said it best.

It doesn't matter if it was upgraded or not. It doesn't need to be upgraded. Any gear longer than a 1:1 will kill performance. 3rd gear in your automatic is 1:1. 4th is something like 0.72:1.

That's why you see stick cars trying to get to the very end of the 1/4 mile in the top of 4th gear. 4th gear in a stick car is 1:1, and 5th is (I think) 0.68:1. Trying to accelerate in 5th gear is a waste. Trying to accelerate in any non-race overdrive gear is a waste.

It shifts great. Heres the parts breakdown w/o prices.

PRRS (?)
2000 Converter (actually 23-2500)
Shift Kit
Converter Bypass Valve
Intermediate 4 pack
Intermediate retainer and spiral
Dir HP clutch Kit
Rev HP clutch kit
Fwd clutch pack
High Energy Overdrive Band
Filter
Bushing Kit
ATF

Total Parts $1004.73
Labor $ 799.50
Total with tax $ 1869.54

I supplied the hardened input shaft for $175.

I guess the convertor was over $400.
