why do after market gears whine?

like the title say, why to after market gears whine? they seem to be a very popular thing, but why do after market gears whine, and if you get the same gear option on say an f150 from the factory the dont?

ok, so then you have to shim it right? how do you shim it, and how does it work? as you can tell im kinda a newbie...

I saw in an issue in 5.0 mag a couple of months ago, self expanding shims. You just put em in and they space themselves?!? IDK about that

I noticed a whining noise after I put my tri-ax and alum driveshaft on. Dont know if it is from the shifter being metal on metal contact with the tranny (just used silicone to seal it) and acting like a tuning fork, the driveshaft, or my tranny being low on oil even thought I check it once every two months?

I had Ford do my gears since my pinion bearing siezed and it was under warranty, and I had them throw 373s in while they had it apart. So cant help ya out on how to shim it correctly.

Not true. Richmond gears are known for just making more noise then others. So are quite, other arn't. If you have a tight backlash, low get of gears like 4.10's, and are still in the process of the break in, then gear whine is normal. If gears were installed improperly you'd know it.

D/S.

Did you line the yellow dots on the D/S up with the one one the axle flange when you installed it? There are 8 different bolt holes on the flange, therefore there are 8 different ways to install it. Try all 8 and see if the whine goes away.

Didnt even notice the dot when I bought it...it was off the showroom floor. Going to be under the car this weekend so I will have to take a look at it....it also vibrates a little around 70mph. The shop I bought it from said it was already balanced but I didnt notice a weight on it. Thanx for the info

Also, when I put my o/r x on, I got the MILs put them on the rear O2s, light is still on so took them off and codes are for all FOUR sensors ($80 each) didn't know if you had any suggestions?

Exactly....mine doesn't whine a bit. If you have too much or too little backlash with the gear then this will happen..I would take it back to whomever installed it if that happened.

aftermarket gears don't whine if installed correctly,they have a larger chance of being noisy because the pinion depth need's to be set with a special tool.with frpp gears the stock pinion shim works 99% of time.the shim is mainly for differences in the housing's,frpp pinions are all machined to the same tolerences and aftermarket are not

Somebody didnt check their backlash . Normally gear whine is associated with improper install, although not all the time. As stated above, some gears make more noise than others. Ive heard shops say that Richmond is the loudest, Motive, then FRPP. Ive heard of some shops refusing to install anything but FRPP because even with proper backlash and all, the gears still whined from other brands.

Guy that did mine would only do FRPP on mustangs.
