Why do our cars have "teeth"?

This may be a really stupid answer but I always thought they were there so you know when you are about to drag your undercarriage on something. It's cheaper to replace that little piece of plastic than to replace the front bumper or your exhaust.

My firebird had basically the same thing but I think it's more aero than anything. Could easily be wrong. [offtopic] saw my old 'bird the other day and the airdam has been broken off :nonono: silly girl doesn't respect my baby :( [/offtopic]
 
I always thougth it was for when u backed up out of a garage or something that had a little drop. I thought it kept your front end up so your body didn't hit. I know thats the only thing that stops my dads vette from hitting the body coming out of the garage. Just my 2 sense
