Why is it everything I read says to remove the starter before you pull the engine? It looks as if you undo the motor mounts it should clear fine. Anybody? And also can I put the engine back in with the BBK shorties already attached?

it depends if your pulling the motor out with the trans still attached or not. If you are leaving the trans in the car and just pulling the motor than you will have to remove the starter in order to disconnect the bellhousing from the motor. If you pulling the trans/motor still connected than you dont have to remove it as long as it clears everything.
