That's the best I can describe it! It's silent in park and neutral but as soon as I drop it into any gear it makes the 'whirring' sound. Noticeable at idle but can't really hear it while driving because of the exhaust tone. Drivetrain out of a '93 Mustang. All I did was drain and install Motorcraft Mercon V trans fluid, filter and new trans pan. Didn't see any metal shavings in the pan when I changed fluid. Checking trans fluid, it's right where it needs to be on the dipstick. Not sure if the trans is original cuz of the 7/26/13 markings on it. Anyone have any ideas?

I would speculate you are hearing the pump whining-did you drain the converter when you changed the filter?

If I recall correctly, probably about 10 qts. Yes, I filled up the torque converter before I installed it.

I don't know AODs so, pardon me if this does not apply:

When I rebuild my WC T5 with Kevlar synchros, it hummed like mini-blower.

With the date scribed on the case, I have to wonder if Kevlar clutch packs were installed during a rebuild. If so, it would explain the whine ( at least, in my head. lol ).

Somebody that knows the AOD better than me might be able to confirm or deny.

After some basic research, I see that it is a common comment among folks who have installed these.

If you want you can call these guys as they have built 100’s if not 1000’s of them.

Bringing this back up, I just realized the noise is only present when the car has been sitting overnight and is cold. If I let it warm up for 10 minutes, I can't hear any noise at all. Maybe the noise is normal when it's cold? Thoughts?

I can't say this for Ford, but learned this with my Dodge Torqueflight.... Fluid will pump in Neutral, but not in park.... This car sat alot so fluid would drain back and it would not move for a few seconds after a cold start unless I put the car in Neutral during warm up...

When it's cold, it makes the noise when I put it in any gear except for park and neutral. Once it's warm, no noise at all.
