why is my belt squeeling!

i'm in the 95 gt. i took the smog pump off and bought a shorter belt but it makes this god awful squeel every time i start it up and sometimes when im driving it. the only idea i have is that the alternator pulley is freezing up because it chews the belt up when it starts squeeling. any ideas?

Take the belt off and hand spin ALL the pulleys and see which on is either frozen or has a lot of resistance to it. It may be your A/C compressor has frozen up on you but check them all.

A lady I work with had a similar prob on her 95 gt. It ended up being that the power steering pully was cocked sidewayz a little and it was causing the alternator to make the noise. This happened after she bought a shorter belt to by pass the a/c. She had to buy a new pully and it is fine now. I think wystangs idea is the best way to figure out which pully it is. But it has to be one of them.
