Why the Low Oil Light!

Alright well i dont want to mess anything up so im making sure by asking you guys. Well the low oil light came on last week. I immediatly checked the level and it was right in the middle of the dipstick where it needed to be. Some times when i turn on the car the light comes on, but half the time, the light is off. is the computer just screwed up or could there be a problem beneath this?

(i check the oil level every day just to make sure, and its holding a perfect level on the dipstick every time)

thanks!

Yeah I have a 96GT and have the same issue as well. Parking on any sort of incline or non-horizontal surface has a tendency to throw that low oil light. It's a PITA but when it comes on just check the levels periodically.

My friend with a 96 Cobra was who told me about the issue, would think they used the same sensor in the GT also. He'd just make it a point to keep an eye on the oil level for piece of mind. Once cars get up in years like ours, they will have issues, mine has a power steering squeek but no fitting to lube it. The joys of older cars.

The problem is the oil pressure switch. I had to replace mine in my 00gt. There is a revised part number and switch.

this is a different switch/sender, 1996 was the only year that had a LOS (low oil sensor) in the oil pan of a 4.6 Mustang, SOHC 's & DOHC's. when the engine gets @ a qt low the sender will go off, also those senders are know for going bad, giving a false reading and causing a small oil leak.

now the one your talking about is the oil pressure sender located in the oil filter housing which measures engine oil pressure and you are correct in stating that 1999 up has a revised oil pressure sender

I stand corrceted.

That is why you sell the parts and I read to get knowledge.

Randy is there any cheap/easy way to fix that issue or would it require removing the oil pan to fix this 96GT problem?

if you need to replace the LOS or the gasket, just drain-off some of the oil so that it's below the LOS. un-hook the elect connector and unscrew the LOS & remove it and the gskt, then just reverse to install. check oil level and your done.

part #'s needed are 1 = F6AZ-6C624-B LOS and 1 = E9DZ-6C626-B round graphite gasket wth o-ring.
