hey, everyone....i have a 2001 GT w/ 46,000 miles on it, and all of the sudden when i press the clutch it makes this wierd screeching sound....its not loud, but very faint.....when i let off the clutch it sounds fine and the gears change as normal...in fact the operation of the clutch is normal....its just when i push on the clutch is makes that noise, do i need a new clutch, will it go away or does it need immediate attention

It sound like the throwout bearing is giving up, which is odd, it should last past 46,000. Anyway, that means the tranny has to come out, so you might as well pony up for an aluminum flywheel and a clutch while you're there.

You have time, it will take quite a while to completely fail. But when you go in there, yeah replace it all...

sh1t loads...at least $400 in labor and the part itself. The TOB won't hurt anything though. Just let it chirp. When you need to rebuild your tranny/clutch, you can replace it then.

The labor to change the TOB and the clutch is almost the same, you go through the same procedure you just unbolt about 10 more bolts, that's why everyone says to replace it if you go in there, the only real cost difference is the parts. It's not that hard of a job, most of us have done clutch changes in the driveway (or at the dragstrip, in the dirt...at night...in the rain..in the dark...) So it' s not like it's an impossible project, you just need to pay attention.

I paid $300 in labor for a full clutch install and everything was done perfect/professionally. You just need to shop around. What I did was go to a few places locally, get a price, then go to another shop and tell them what the previous shop quoted. That would get me a lower quote, then I finally went to the last shop (which seemed the most reliable of them all) gave the guy the previous quote and got myself a good deal. He was looking for work and to get his name out there so I made out like a bandit

As was said, dont pull everything out just to do the TOB. Do you have a T45? If so, you can buy a King Cobra clutch kit for like $150ish which comes with the tob, pressure plate and disk, then you just need the flywheel, new flywheel bolts, pivot ball and pilot bearing. The whole job cost about $600 for me.

another possibility...

Just another possibility...
I have seen clutches that arn't adjusted properly actually have the fingers on the pressure plate get pushed in so far that they contact the clutch and flywheel. As long as your clutch engagement isn't really high off the floor, your most likely safe. 90% of the time it is just the TOB. Just though I would give ya a heads up on the other 10%.
