will a 91+ hatch latch work on an 89?

alright, so my hatch wont latch now, of course the plastic bushing on the striker was broken, put a new one on, and it still wont latch. pulled the latch and it looks like one of the springs came out of location. ive been fidiling with it a bit to try to get it back in, but im about to give up on it and id like a backup plan. of course none of the parts stores sites list latches, and places like 50resto only have the 91+ versions as far as i can tell. can i somehow make one of the newer latches work? or am i just stuck trying to get this one fixed?

well, i messed with it enough that it works now, no strange rattles or anything either, so i dont really need another one atm, however if this one did it once, its likely to do it again, so if any knows what exaclty the differences are between the two id still like to know.
