Will this Ford Racing water pump fit my '90?

I need a new water pump ASAP and this is what I'm looking at: http://store.summitracing.com/defau...4294908282+4294924500+4294822066&autoview=sku
Part# FMS-M-8501-D50 .

It's listed for '94 and '95 mustangs, but is there any reason it won't work in my '90 5.0? I guess the only real question is if my clutch fan will bolt up...? It looks like it's got the same flange as my stock pump, but who knows if that's even a pic of this exact model.


If it won't work, can anyone suggest an alternative that's not too expensive? $50 for a new Ford Racing pump seems like a steal, I'm on a very tight budget right now so hopefully I can use it...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated... I don't think I should even drive the car until I get a new pump, it's leaking pretty bad now.

go to the parts store and get a reman one. $20

I also found this FMS pump mentioned in an old thread http://store.summitracing.com/partd...FMS-M-8501-B50&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch
Part # FMS-M-8501-B50

This one is listed for '86-'93 5.0L's but doesn't say it's Mustang specific... what's weird is it's more than 3x as much as the other FMS pump... and the pics of the two pumps are totally different, but I'm assuming that has to be Summit's mistake... right?

I used to work at a parts store and saw a lot of those reman'ed pumps coming back with leaks or even bad bearings... including ones for 302's. I'd rather not chance having to replace it again, IMO it's worth it to spend $50 or even $90 for something I know will work right...

The pump I bought for my H/C/I car is M-8501-C50 . It's a stock replacement reverse flow water pump with OEM quality....and it's super cheap.

Looks like basically the standard flow counterpart to the first pump I posted...

Is it true that high flow pumps rob more power than standardones? I don't really need the extra volume, but the idea of equal flow to both sides of the engine is appealing.

94-95 pumps are a little different. I would not waste my money on a reman one at a parts store, your only asking for trouble and ford waterpumps are a pain to R&R. A higher volume pump pulling more water will of course take more power to run, but not a lot.

Looks like Summit's info is correct. The original water pump you posted is a short serpentine belt pump for 94-95 Stangs according to http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_detailspf.asp?PartKeyField=6448.

Oh by the way, the part number of the waterpump I have on my car is F5ZE I believe....so that means 1995 Mustang. I compared it with my '85 waterpump and it's the exact same thing.....but new.

Well then, looks like that "C50" stock replacement pump is what I want... can't really beat a brand new OEM pump for 50 bucks.

Equal flow, a little higher volume is good.

I'd also STRONGLY recommend a "hi flow" 180 t-stat. Mine now runs right on the money all the time irregardless of conditions. The hi flow stats like out of Summit keep the engine lots closer to the intended temps.

The Edlebrock pumps look really nice... probably more than I need, but if I had the money I'd go with one of those.

I'm already running a Mr. Gasket 180* balanced t-stat... definately worth the $9.

Question, does rusty water in the cooling system contribute to pump failure? I'd have to assume that it would , if for no other reason than there's not enough coolant left at that point to lubricate the pump properly. The "water" in there when I bought the car was NASTY... if you can even call it water, it was more like liquid rust, really. At least they knew to change the oil...
