I bought a 98 Ford Explorer 2 door and it has a 4.0L V6 in it and was wondering if I put Flowmaster dual exhaust would I sound like a ricer. A friend said I would but I am not sure.

in my 3.8 v6 my car sounds good and non rice up until about 3g rpm, then you can tell that its a 6, but down low it sounds pretty nice. it does get a little ricey tho, around 3.

There is a 4.0 Explorer in my town that has some kind of dual exhaust that exits out the sides in the back. Although it doesn't sound exactly like a ricer, it come pretty close. He has trispokes, and an aluminum wing on the back, yes a wing on an explorer....

It won't sound like rice... but it will sound like a six cylinder with a flowmaster. So, it won't sound as nice as a V8, but it won't sound near as terrible as a ricer.

Won't sound like a V8, but it'll sound better than it does now. Shouldn't sound like rice... these are Flows we're talking about, not Matrix or APC.

First off - unless you just want to add the extra weight associated with duals they won't add any performance benefit over a properly sized single system. I've had performance exhausts on two of the 60 degree Ford V-6 engines - the 2.9L and the 4.0L. I liked the way both of them sound - not like a 4 banger, not like an inline 6, and not like a V-8. Not better or worse - just different. Actually, to me, they sound like the high-performance European 6's (Jag, BMW, etc.). I'd run a set of shorty headers, and "Y" both sides into a single 2.5". Then pick your muffler. The only thing what might sound pretty goofy is if you decide to run the duals, and don't put an H or X pipe in. It will sound really 'interesting' if you go that route.

There's a Chinese saying my father in law picked up on business over there, which they use as a curse when they don't want to sound like it: "Have an interesting day". That could mean they hope you win the lotto, or that your splean ruptures and you almost die. Either one would be an interesting day...

one of my friends had dual flows on his blimmy (i forget which one it was) and it sounded ok i guess...it was loud and had a little tone at the lower rpms...but u can never get it to sound like a V8. i would do what micheal yount says and get a good single pipe system. it will sound more racy and tuned. good luck man

And remember guys - the 60 degree V-6's sound completely different than the 90-degree V-8-based V-6's from GM (any of the 3.8 or 4.3L variety). I think they sound much better - as I said before, more European, which is a good thing. To me, the 90 degree V-6's sound a lot like the long stroke in-line domestic 6's which remind me a lot of the GMC school bus I rode on years ago. Largely because the school bus HAD a long stroke GMC 6 powering it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think i might get flowmaster dual exhaust system. And for those who don't know, I looked under it and saw that it is 2 pipes into one muffler and then a single outlet. So I can make it a true dual exhuast. I am not really going for performance, just a little sound and I like the way 2 3 and half inch chrome tips look on them.

I think Saleen makes something just for the Explorers, but they may be V8's.

my dad has a explorer sport track with custom dual exhaust straight pipes with chrome tips (3inch). I think it sounds good.
