Willing to install an EGT gauge and do it right

Autometer intallation instructions suck. They recommend to intall the sensor 1-2" from the cylinder head (when using the screw in or weld method) OR 6" down from the manifold / midpipe junction (when using the clamp on method). Looks like the recommended sensor location depends on the installation method, as if the temps were the same at 1-2" from the head and 6" down the flange...

WTF is up with that ? Am I right in assuming sensor location greatly affects the displayed temperature ?

Can anyone please give me some tips on that installation ?
