Wiring

Hey guys, as stated in a previous post i'm finnaly cleaning up the stang. I decided to start with the wiring, it causes the most mess in my mind.
My problem is that as I was under the dash (believe me it is such a pain being under there, I'm 5'11" with a 6'3" wingspan under the dash with the seats still in it and the steering wheel still in it. I can't get the steering wheel off nor the seats because I dont have long enough tools to reach the bolts under the floor pan, and I dont have a 15/16 adapter for my tools to pull off the steering wheel nor do i have a steering wheel puller. Anyway, I found this under the dash, It leads to no where that I can see.

I'm talking about the black thingy with the metal parts exposed. Where is it supposed to lead to?

What are 4 way flashers? in the glove box there is a switch, but again it doesn't lead anywhere, I figured out that all the mess that is under the dash is because of the newer stereo that the guy put in.
Also, what are the purpose of relays? there are about 4 of em under the dash for the steero and other parts like the ignition and stuff.

4 way flashers - aka Emergency Fashers or Hazard Lamps.... The front and rear signal lanps all flash at the same time.

As Az Pete said, part of the switch is broken off. The picture looks like the electrical contact portion and what's in your glove box is probably the mechanical toggle portion.

Relays are installed in a circuit to allow a low current device control a high currrent device. They have a small electromagnet that pulls a set of contacts.

Example: A set of driving lights draws 15 amps. Instead of wiring in a heavy duty switch and thick wire, a relay can be used near the driving lights to control the high current from the battery to the lamps, and a small light duty switch and wire can carry the control current to the relay.
