wont idle, dies if let off gas

For those of you who have been following me, yesterday I was gonna do a compression test. warmed engine up and was taking spark plugs out. 1 broke off I got it out today. Put new plug back in checked the gaps n pulled plugs etc. Put them all back in. Started her up and she wont idle unless I hold the gas. Also yesterday I had my wife start her up while I was under the hood. I heard a loud pop/backfire either while she was accelerating, or starting the car I dont remember, but it wouldnt idle then either. This was before plug broke off. Any ideas what the pop was which is prob the source to not idling?

And I dont think its the Fuel Pump cause I can hear it. Had fuel filter changed a few months ago

Confirm the firing order is correct from the distributor to the plugs. It's easy to make a mistake especially if the wires were pulled from the plug and weren't marked.

They are marked, and was doing this right before I pulled plugs

Maybe check your base timing then clean you MAF while you are at it.

MAF is clean. I pulled the MAF sensor to see if it would stay running, but it didnt. What all sensors is there that I can pull and if they are bad the car would/could run? 02 sensors. Also stupid question, but how do I know if I have catalytic converters? Wanting to check ignition coils too, but dont have ohmmeter. Took my code scanner back. Man there is so much to this and so many things that can cause the same symptoms I dont know where to start and very low on cash

You really need the scanner or the ability to read codes on a computer controlled car. A digital multimeter is another essential.

The cats look like small mufflers and are on the mid-pipe. Stock has 4 in total. 2 on each side. Small ones closest to the engine and larger ones just before the "H" in the mid-pipe.

Any chance that you cracked a plug re-installing them? Are you sure that the boot over the plug is all the way on? I'm assuming that it ran fine before you decided to do the compression test.

Bassani x pipe no cats. I never got the compression test done. I was warming engine to do compression test when this started

Sounds like the IAC (Idle Air Control valve). Easy fix...$40.00 at Autozone.

instead of buying a brand new IAC, try taking it off and cleaning out the spring with throttle body/carb cleaner. it probably has carbon build up on it causing it to stick which woud cause your car to die. but a bad egr can cause your car to stall as well. try weeding out the simpliest things first.
