I've heard that shifting from 3-od in the auto screws up OD, because of the sudden surge of power destroying the bands. I have been searching around the forums, and just have a couple quick questions:

1) Say I was pushing around 400 rwhp; I wind out third gear, left off the gas for an easy 3-od shift, then get back on it WOT. Would it still kill the bands?

2) Would a kevlar or heavy duty band do anything to fix/cure either shifting at WOT into OD or just going WOT in OD?

Why are you needing to WOT shift into OD on a consistent basis anyway? Its not even that useful really. :shrug:

That being said I have done it and do it from time to time with no issue.

I dunno if the gearing is different in your cars but the last non-OD gear only brings me up to about 85mph.

And yes, if your car shifts into OD while you are at WOT you do run the risk of snapping the input/output (can't remember which) shaft and destroying your OD at a minimum, the entire tranny possibly. As far as I know, there is no fix or upgraded part to fix the issue.
 
Only issue there is the car will probably try downshift on you if you are in OD and then floor it, then you'll be in 3rd really quick and at WOT when it re-shifts into OD. It's not impossible, I just would be very very very very wary of doing it in a 300+RWHP car. Get your OD off button fixed so when you push it the car WILL NOT shift into OD until you push the button again. From the factory, the car will still shift into OD once you redline in 3rd.
 
Heres the low down.......My OD went out because the snap ring on the end which holds the OD drum in place has a tendacy to pop off at high rpm shifts......not saying it will but in my case it did......most of the OD's that I have seen go this has happened to......another failure is the OD band........There isn't a hole lot of clutch material on that band and the OD servo is the weak point! It only has one O-ring and has a tendacy to bleed past the O-ring at WOT shifts......I upgraded to a better servo that has a dual O-ring set up and the kevlar OD band........the stock
gears 1-D can handle close to 700 hp from the factory with upping the shift pressure or a good shift kit or J-mod......the OD band has failed with stock factory HP over time! Unless you have over a 4.30 gear you can wind Drive thru the traps in the 1/4......so just bybass the OD.......whick actually keeps you in your power band.......on the street.....from a stop to WOT your OD would last....alot of upshifts and down shifts at highway speeds is what kills the OD!

Let me put it to you this way. Any WOT Shift in OD is bad, if you are lucky you will get away with it once, twice and maybe even a few times. If you break something and are lucky, all you will break is the Input shaft. If you break something and are not lucky, you need a new transmission.

My question is, why do you want to go WOT in OD?
 
I've read what seems like all of the articles relating to the 4r70w, and all I can find is don't use a kevlar OD band because of the slipping that occurs, nothing about going WOT in OD.

a kevlar band wont solve the problem, the input shaft absorbing all of the force at once after the band engages is the more common problem than the band slipping and breaking something. When i rebuilt my 4R i put in a hardened input (if ur referring to a flywheel or TC it's called the output) shaft and i still dont do it and im no where near 400hp. 3rd gear on a 4R70W should bring you (if WOT from 1st gear) plenty over 100mph for 1/4 mile runs. The problem most people encounter it passing a car, i.e. flooring while in 4th, it automatically downshifts into 3rd then u remian floored into 4th - if this is the case lifting off the gas comming towards redline is a good idea so the input shaft isint engaged under full power. After rebuilding mine, w/ the O/D ubtton pressed and OD off it WONT shift into 4th ever.
 
about a year ago when half my dash lights were out because of a fuse, and i didnt know that od was off, i did 140 right about at the redline, in 3rd. before letting off

with stock gears i assume...everyone has gears though....with 3.73s my cars 3rd will go to about 115 in 3rd...but it shifts at like 5k and wont let me hold it into 3rd:shrug:
it shifts at like 100
 
OK I have a quick question. If you have a 99-04 GT w. 4R70W tranny and stock 3.27 gearing, what MPH will your shifts occur at while at WOT? I'm sure that info is out there somewhere but my search skillz suck.
 
The majority of the replies in here seem to be referring to "you won't need OD in the 1/4 mile", or "find a way to turn OD off and lock it". I've got that, what I was wondering is maxing the car out speed wise. Assuming it was set up for high speeds, and you did an easy 3-OD shift, and you had gobs of horsepower, and you were on a track, could you continue and wind out OD, or would that destroy a bunch of transmission components?
 
yes, if your attempting your highest speed possible - let off the gas when switching from 3-4 but give it a gradual enough amount afterwards so that it doesnt downshift back into third (which shouldn't be a problem if your approaching redline in 3rd b4 the shift)
