Would it be better to make a gasket or use RTV sealant?

I need the gasket for the oil pan pickup to the oil pump. I tried making out of gasket stuff and it looks ok but I was wondering if I should just use some RTV sealant instead. What do you think?

do you mean the paper sheet gasket material? If you got that, make one, if not i'd use some grey rtv.

Made one, What has to be installed before I throw the pan on? I have the shaft, pump, pickup rotating assembly. Do I need to install the front and rear main seals now?

Make one, let it overhang a little where you can later go around it with a razorblade when it's all tightened up. Also use some gasket sealent since you are making it out of gasket paper. That gasket paper isn't the best stuff around.. Try to find an actual gasket that will fit IMO.

Well you have to pull the timing covers to get the crank through it, so I would imagine that installing the seals would be the last thing to do.

Leave the covers and seals out, and do it last.
