So I Am having some promblems with my car and I can not figure it out.

Long story short, 3 weeks ago driving down lewvan car started backfiring bad and died, I wasn't even into the throttle. I pulled over and tried starting it and the only thing it would do is backfire and not even kick like it wanted to start.
I had the car towed to my garage and have since put in a brand new MSD distributor, check and cleaned every electrical connection, and done a compression test that showed 205 psi on every cylinder, there wasn't even a 5% variance.
Absolutly no chage in what happens when I try to start the car, other than now it slightly kicks like it wants to go but alot of backfiring with it. I know that it is deffinitly something to do with the timing, but since everything mechanical checks out perfect and all electronics regarding the ignition are brand new also brand new plug wires and plugs, I am leaning towards an actual ECU problem. I have quadruple checked the placement of the distributor and it is dead on.

Do any of you guys have any suggestions of what else to check.

I am going to find another ECU and try that, but that may take a few days.

Appreciate any input anyone has.

Thanks,
Big John

I don't know how many grounds a Fox has but mine has a stupid amount. Have you checked for a loose ground or screwed up battery cable? I know you probably checked em already but just a suggestion. How about even a low battery? I had a crack in mine and it did very similar things. It was cracked right along the seam so you couldn't even tell.

Have you checked the fuel system? Don't ask how I know but your fuel system may be dumping a tonne of fuel in the motor, causing your back fire and no run condition.

I have checked all the grounds that appear in any wiring diagrams I could find. I did check and clean both battery terminals, and the positive was very corroded where the terminal clamps to the wire, so I fixed that up nice. While it is sitting in the garage I have a second battery hooked up alwell to ensure a good supply of amperage during the starting tests, the higher compression slows it down quite a bit with one battery. Voltage at the computer and multiple points throughout the harness all check out good.

For fuel, I do have a little extra fuel dumping in during startup since I don't have a Tweecer yet, but with the 36 lber's and the C&L Mass Air, it always worked decent before. I would just have to occasionally hold it WOT during startup which stops the injectors from firing(not sure if true, but read it in some posts I found here on Stangnet while researching and it appears to work).
Fuel pressure is set to 39psi, and the pump and regulator both apprear to be working properly. During the many many attemps to start the car before going into the garage, I did foul the plugs with fuel, but have changed them out.

Thanks for the suggestions, anything else you guys can think of.

Also to add, I am not recieving any out the ordingary codes from the computer other than ECT out of range which I am replacing this morning. The rest have to do with EGR since it doesn't exist anymore, and fuel circuit since I wired in my own relay on the fuel pump. Nothing that indicates anything electronic other than the ECT which I know the car with start with out one.

This is really starting to get to me, and all I want to do is drive the car for the rest of this month and enjoy the last few nice days we are going to have this year

Maybe there will even be some kind of reward for anyone that can help rectify this issue.

I wonder if your coil is not shot. Did you try a different coil?

Any chance your cam has jumped a gear forward or back on the timing chain? It's way out there but you've checked most everything else.

Been out of town for a week and haven't been able to do anything with the car.

The coil is giving off lots of spark, I am thinking it is ok.

As for the cam having jumped a tooth on the timing chain, that is my fear that something along those lines happend. If I can not make any head way with the car dealing with ignition stuff tomorrow then the front of the motor will be coming off so I can check things out.

What engine do you have in there? Is it a bored-stroked 351 Windsor. If so, a good place to start would be to turn the engine over so the timing mark on the balancer is at 0 so the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke and then pop the cap off the distributer and see if the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire. If so, then your timing is OK and you can go on to the next step.

I have that totally covered!

I did run into a problem with the ignition switch failing into pieces when I unplugged the plug to test the wires. Once the new switch is in I will test it again.

Well I just found my problem.

The teeth on my Camshaft Distributor Drive Gear are worn down to almost nothing and some are even completly missing
The engine has less than 4000 km on it.

It was a CompCam, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Do any of you guys know what might cause this?

The gear on my distributor was in near perfect shape.......

Guess the stang is parked for the winter now, and what a great time for a custom cam!

Thanks for all your suggestions.

So anyone wanna lend a hand pulling a motor some time

I have heard of roller cams eating dristributor gears and vice versa. You have to use a bronze gear or something. Maybe give CompCams a call for their input.

Roller or Flat tappet?
Does the dist have the right gear on it?
Did you use the compcams break in additive?
Alignment on cam to dist. gear?
Camshaft endplay, and how much?
If gear was changed, re-check the placement of it. Alot of people buy these dist gears and put them on where the old one lines up to the role pin hole, THIS IS THE WRONG WAY!!!

Just afew things that come to mind right away
Hope it helps

Jesse.

Cam is a Hydraulic Roller
Distributor does have the correct gear on it
Did use the additive
Did not not check the alignment or the end play. Solely based on my inexpereince, I didn't even think it could be out. Live and Learn, Right!'

What is the "correct" way to check for gear alignment so I know what to do next time? Also what should the end play be?

I think that will deffinity help for when I install a new cam, thanks Jesse.

I like to measure camshaft end play with a dial indicator on the front of the cam gear and the slowly move the cam in and out. You can also use a feeler gauge and check for clearance between the front of the camshaft retaining plate and the back of the timing gear.

Here is a link on installing distributor the shaft gear:
