Cam is a Hydraulic Roller
Distributor does have the correct gear on it
Did use the additive
Did not not check the alignment or the end play. Solely based on my inexpereince, I didn't even think it could be out. Live and Learn, Right!'

What is the "correct" way to check for gear alignment so I know what to do next time? Also what should the end play be?

I think that will deffinity help for when I install a new cam, thanks Jesse.

Is this a small base circle type cam or a tie-bar lifter set-up?

CanadaStang has posted up the FMS gear instructions which are VERY close to the MSD ones. (been awhile, but i'm pretty sure they are different)
Just goes to show they are NOT all built the same.
ONLY use the instructions that match your gear, if you don't know then you'll have to go with the way the gear pattern looks with some marking compound or after some short run time. But still use the FMS or MSD instruction for some guidelines.
Also check cam gear to crank gear alignment with a straight edge. Make sure one gear is not further back or forward then the other. If out it could cause one of the two to "walk forward or back" instead of "floating" (mostly crank worry)
Use plenty of lube on the two meshing gears before start-up.

When using a new dist. gear always check it after it has run for 15 minutes and then again after 1-2 days and again after acouple weeks and again at the next oil change. If all is still well it should be fine.
Any time i change a gear i check it at least 3 times, its not the install that is the concern but the two products being used.

Jesse,

It is a small base circle cam, with the factory style lifters.

I haven't pulled everything apart yet, I plan on doing that in the next week or so. Just finishing a new garage and no electricity in it yet.
After I order a custom cam, when I decide which heads I am going to go with, I will deffinitly check everything atleast 3 times before it all gets bolted together, and will deffinitly check the distributor gear as you suggested.

Be sure to check things as they come apart also to see if there is something else wrong

Cam end play.
Crank end play.
Timing set alignmient.
Oil pump gear clearance.
Oil pump drive shaft to dist. end play.
When you take the cam out check the back of the thrust plate for wear.
Check all cam bearings.
Check oil gallery holes aren't pluged.

Just a few more things.

Take your time and check it ALL.
