how can i find out if my car has the right transmission?

right now the clutch is open and is hanging lower than the engine.(the part wear the engine and tranny meet)

and the shifter is mounted up and to the right so that in first gear your knuckles hit the ash tray door

im pretty sure something is wrong and dnt know what to do

thanks

its a 68 4sp 289 mustang

it just seems that the transmission is too big forthe engine that it doesnt mount up correctly and the shifter is too far forward and to the right(ill get pics up later)

Could be an aftermarket shifter put on the original tranny...

However, 4 speed Falcons had the shifter mounting holes farther forward on the tailshaft, which could put the shifter in the dash.
It's the fact that you say the shifter is off to the side... That is a Hurst aftermarket shifter trait... to move to the side.
