wtf. Im gonna set it on fire!!!! (lights dont work)

I go outside today with a migraine to go put a 5" tach in my pile.

Hook it all up, have my white wire (lights) hooked directly off a wire going to the headlight switch It was blue/red stripe.

anyway it gets dark out so I turn the lights on, but none of the interior lights come on, the outside comes on fine, and the intruments themselves work fine.

so I take a look at the fuse block, sure enough ones blown, so I go get another fuse put it in and with the switch off and all it blows, so I go get another fuse this time a 30 amper it blows that instantly as well, again nothing on..

so I unplug my tach wire and it still does this, i used a jumper wire so jump the terminals together I felt it getting warm, after about .00000009 sec. so I ditched that idea. But now my interior lights wont come on and its really getting on my nerves..

SO!! what could it be? Dimmer switch? I really dont know why..
but yesterday they worked fine.. come out today the fuse is blown and nothing, and blowing everyfuse that went in...

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!

for your lights i thought it was the brown thick wire..u got the wrong wire.. ur probly shorted something out

no its the illumination wire for the cluster/hvac

its blowing no#16 fuse which is for either the horn(which I dont have hooked up) or the cig lighter which ive had the wire fall off of it before, so I might be grounding out... Ill have to look.

ill look into that, my oil press gauge is in my vent, and I lit it up doing the same thing but whatever it will work right someday lol...

I'm confused. You don't have instrument lights but you did not blow that fuse (fuse 13)?

Disconnect the tach completely and fix the lighting problem. Then you can add the tach back in when the lighting is fixed. ALWAYS fuse new power wires on accessories you add. A one amp fuse for the tach power-lead and a one amp fuse for the tach lighting should be sufficient.

You know this but it is for future searchers. Never ever use a larger fuse than specified in the fusebox. When that's done, finding the issue can often require dissecting the entire circuit or replacing blown components. That is if a fire doesnt start in the first place.

If you tap into the illumination wire, you want the light blue one with the red stripe. I had the same problem a few days ago. All my lights are now back on.

I also unhooked my tach and started all over. I taped off the wires so they would not short. I then found the 5 amp fuse #4 that controls the dimmer was blown. I changed that fuse and hooked up my tach and all is well. You are definitely on the right wire. The brown works too but you will not be able to dim them.

well it turns out my cig lighter is bad, thats what was blowing the fuse #16.

the other 5A fuse was also blown, and I didnt see it, although I checked it like 5 times, so I put a new one in and its fine now!!

That damn #4 fuse. I had to hold it to a backlight to see it was blown.
