Wtf is up with chrome?

I have this tarnish/rust looking stuff on my chrome rims on a truck. Is there any way of getting it off without ruining the rim? This scares me away from ever buying chrome for the car. Any help would be great. It is a brownish rust looking color.

Be very cautious .... that could be the copper plating under the chrome starting to come through. Prior to chrome plating a piece they will copper plate it so the chrome has something to stick to. If the chrome isn't very thick then the copper will start to show after sometime. Using a polishing material will only remove the little chrome that is left on the wheel, thereby exposing the copper plating. Do you have a pic of the wheel?

uhh i can try and get some...its the 20 inch wheels on the hemi rams. It is starting in the inside of the spokes.

What year is it? The newer ones (I think 2003 and up) are just wheel covers (essentially really nice hub caps). They have had some problems with the chrome on them because it is a plastic wheel cover, copper plated, and then chromed. My dad got his replaced under warranty. If it is prior to 2003 then it will be an actual wheel (no cover) that is polished.

your saying the 20" wheels is a chromed wheel cover?????? :rlaugh:

I dont think so,their aluminum wheels chrome plated.

Since it is a factory wheel, let us assume that the chrome thickness isn't the issue and that his rims are just starting to develop spot rust.... It's time to wax those puppies!

Good point about the copper bath prior to chrome plating though.

Here you go, straight off of Dodgetalk.com. I have no reason to make this stuff up. I only answer if I know what I am talking about. In this instance I do since I have dealt first hand with it. These wheels are know to be somewhat of a problem because of the plastic cover. Thanks

Umm No ... they are not a chrome plated aluminum wheel :nonono: They are a chrome platted cover. The previous years had a polished wheel with no cover.

CORRECT! It is a wheel cover, take your finger nail and run it accross the back of one of the spokes just at the edge (where the front meets the back) You wheel see what he is talking about. It is a wheel cover that almost looks like a wheel!

Ok guys well here is an attempt for pictures, hard to take pics with a reflection. Let me know what you think, I guess I can take it in if its covered by warranty. By the way it is a 2005.
