351C carb and intake manifold question

I am wondering what carb and intake do you guys suggest.
The set up that I will be using is 396 cleveland with 4V heads. I want to try to make 450 rwhp. I'm probably going to use a nitrous cam and have the exhaust side of the heads raised.
Thanks
Jhery

The blue thunder is a good choice, but you could actually make that number with a low/mid rise single plane like an xcelerator.... something to think about if there is a cost or space (height) concern. I was still making power at 7k when I shut my motor down on the dyno. You will want to move up to a 850 DP IMO.
I ran a 770 VS on my 408 and I made significantly more HP with an 850 DP

If you use a dual plane, make sure it is an aggressive design. Not the run of the mill small port stuff like Edelbrock Performer. You will choke the engine. Dual planes, even a large port, aggressive style, will need a larger carb than a single plane.
On the single planes, your best bet would be a mild one like Torker or Port-O-Sonic. The Weiand is low and would fit like stock, but it is very mild with smaller plenum and ports. Some grinding would open it up some. Single planes are naturally more sensitive to overcarbing, so a slightly smaller carb might be in order. With a manual tranny they use double pump Holleys well.
4v heads are also more sensitive to carb size, but your cubic inches would tame that issue some.
IMO, I would use a 3310 Holley and super tune it just so...
That is the Holley 750 vacuum secondary.

The 3310 is the runnin'est carb on the planet...

EEWWWW, staying under the stock shaker set up sucks.... you could (if you dont mind changing underhood looks) make a new lower housing for the aircleaner element, and go to a pannel style KnN mounted flat under the scoop. It works out about an inch shorter than the stock set-up (i had a heck of a time finding the correct air cleaner element anyhow...) and this helps ofset the added height of a good intake. Just an idea... its pretty easy, cardboard pattern, a piece of sheet metal, and an afternoon (and evening) and youre in buisness....

If it HAS to stay stock then you might look at a swap meet, for the old Holley strip dominator. (imho) It's an excelent singleplane manifold (dont let the name scare you, it works great) that does not have much vertical rise over stock (about .25 or .375 i think)

Hope this helps

I jus want to keep it under the stock hood because I like to ram air shaker hood and also because I want ppl to think its a stock car when its def not going to be. But how exactly would I go along in making that set up?

Put a straight edge on the fenders across the top of the motor where the carb sits. Measure down to the top of carb where the air filter sits you can also measure to the carb mouting plate on the intake.

Hold the straight edge to the underside of the hood....the ends need to rest on the lips that sit on the fenders when closed....measure up to the sheet metal at its highest point where the air cleaner would sit under it and notate the measurement.

Add the 2 numbers together (the mounting plate and the hood recess) and this is the MAXIMUM height you can get under the hood with the intake you have now. Subtract some amount for a confidence level to leave space between the top of the filter and the hood. I run 1/2 of clearance between my hood and the top of the airfilter assembly. (I also run a torque strap for peice of mind) and that will give you the maximum total height for the motor and air filter to fit under the hood. Now you just need to do some research.

Look up the specs on the height of the intake you have now.

Look up the specs on the height of the intake(s) you are considering.

Subtract the two to get the height change.

If you have 2 inches from the top of the carb where the airfilter sits to the hood, you have enough room to run a 1.75 drop base air cleaner and a 3 inch filter. This would be an aftermarket setup though so your stock ram air assemble would not fit anymore, but you should be able to fabs somethign up to continue using the ram air for fresh air intake for the motor.

I am with you however.

I will argue a little here...
My Strip Dom was quite a bit taller than stock.
Also, this intake is FAR from being mild.
It doesn't turn on good til after 4k.
It has earned it's rep of being the best intake ever made for a Cleveland, but that is in an all out rpm power sense.
Also, I just sold mine for a 'goldmine', I don't recommend the price of admission unless you really need it.
They are highly sought after by racers, if you are running on the street, it is not worth the bother IMO.
